Cheryl Benyi Obituary

Benyi, Cheryl
Cheryl Ann Benyi, age 71, passed away after a brave and courageous battle with cancer in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loved ones on March 29, 2021, in Columbus, Ohio. She is survived by her husband, David Benyi; children, Ryan Benyi (Bree Stephany) and Arin Sheeler (Scott Sheeler); grandchildren, Elijah, Abigail, and Micah Sheeler and Julian Benyi; grand-dog, Sophia; sister, Chris Burke (Andy Sylvia). She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Louise Burke. Cheryl leaves behind a legacy of extraordinary measure. She was a kind, giving, selfless and generous wife, mother, Gana, daughter, sister and dear friend to many. Her adventurous nature took her to many unique and beautiful places around the world. She delighted in tending to her vegetable and flower gardens and backyard ponds, enjoyed a round of golf, a hike in the woods, kayaking and playing with her grandchildren. She was honored with the title of State of Ohio Outdoor Woman of the Year in her younger years and spent her career as a Special Education teacher in the Columbus Public School system. Due to the Covid pandemic, Cheryl's family will hold a private service. A Celebration of Cheryl's life will be announced later this summer. I knew Cheryl from 5th grade on at Heyl Elementary. We sat by each other because of our last names. I was always inspired by her to be a better student. She was a great friend as well. May the Lord comfort you as you remember this great teacher and woman.

Cheryl was a kindred spirit. It only took a little while to feel like she had been a friend for years. I have enjoyed getting to know David, and her Mom, and watching her family grow over the years. She was blessed with so much love around her, and it came through her to others. I will miss my friend.

The closeness of our families, even though miles apart, is so very special. We always celebrated the joyful and sad times together. The legacy of Cheryl will let that continue. Love and deepest sympathy to all my Columbus Cousins. Cheryl is greatly loved and remembered by her eagerness to help, her enthusiasm for life, and love of family. David, I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Cheryl, while I didn't know her as well as I did you from playing for the quartet, I know from hearing you talk of her that she was a special woman and always supported you in whatever you did. Having also lost my spouse recently, I know exactly what you are going through now and still think of him daily. Please know that I am with your family, each day in thought and if you need anything, you know how to reach me. Janet

Cheryl was one of the most caring people, and I feel blessed to have known her. We lived a few houses from each other and walked to Heyl everyday with Janet Klopfer, wonderful, carefree days. I believe she has found peace; even though, she will be sorely missed.
