At a track & field meet last week, I was informed by a coach about the loss of Ed, a coaching legend in Ohio cross country and track & field. My heart is broken, and I pray for peace, understanding, and comfort to be upon members of the Rarey Family.

Special memory: In the late 1980's, I lived in Gahanna and was teaching and coaching at Licking Heights schools, when the HS enrollment size fell into the Div. III category. Our T&F teams practiced on a cinder track. For several years, just prior to league and district championship time, Coach Rarey permitted our LH athletes to practice on Lincoln's all-weather track. How generous and kind! Several of the girls and boys T&F team members qualified for the State Championship Meet for a handful of years, thanks, in part, to Coach Rarey's ability to share, and care, about all competitive athletes!

Since then, whenever in the same location, Coach Rarey and I would chat and laugh about sports stories. We, central Ohio coaches, will miss his smile and big heart, yet know his spirit is among us at the track and on the field.

Lincoln Elementary staff under the leadership of Ed Raey was a family.
He was not our boss, he was our mentor, guide, and friend. As a family we all worked together to help each child become successful. Children always came first. His vision became ours, all children were to be loved, respected and over all slse heard. We, Lincoln teachers still to this day remain a family and we mourn the loss of our dear friend and life coach. God Bless You Ed Rarey

So kind, and a very good listener.

He was my principal:
On November 22, 1963, I was a safety patrol boy and after lowering the American flag, I returned it to his office as usual. A teacher was sobbing by the radio as the news of President Kennedy's assassination was being announced. As a leader, he inspired all students that day as he communicated our National loss.
He was my coach:
Upon finishing an 880 race in my final year of Junior High, he greeted me at the finish line and asked if I would try out for High School Cross Country the following Fall. I asked; What is Cross Country?
Throughout High School, I ran for Coach Rarey and he instilled in me the discipline of and the passion for running. I still run distance thanks to "Coach". Craig Patterson-67-70,

Our condolences to the family of Ed Rarey. Ed will always be remembered as the essence of the Groveport community. The pride and love he had for this community infected us all. He welcomed our family to the neighborhood with kindness and respect. Our family so enjoyed his love of children, convertibles and Groveport. He will be sorely missed.

Every spring I looked forward to running track for Coach Rarey, such a special time of year. So many great memories of all the meets we would go to and the dynasty he built there at Lincoln. He was a great role model and we all became better athletes and humans because of his presence. Coach was truly a once in a lifetime type of person that you would meet. I extend my condolences to Coach Rarey's family.

I am so saddened to hear of your loss. Mr. Rarey meant a great deal to our family. He was beyond words kind to my Aunt Brenda Sims. He always had wonderful stories to share of our history. He will always be remembered as a great soul.

Coach Rarey was a magnificent man who many of us modeled our lives after. He was motivational mainly because we didn't want to disappoint this man we admired so much. He will be missed. Jeff Tesnow, 1979 Gahanna cross country captain

While I never ran or coached for Ed, as a young opposing track coach I feel that he was a mentor. Watching him coach kids, and listening to him represent Gahanna Lincoln High School - he taught me how to be a professional, and how to treat kids the right way. He is a legend in Central Ohio - and I am proud to have been a friend. My deepest sympathies to his family.
