Ewing Boles Obituary

Boles Jr, Dr. Ewing Thomas
1921 - 2018
Dr. Ewing Thomas Boles, Jr, born May 6, 1921, was the son of Ewing Thomas Boles and Katherine Dwyer Boles. He grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and graduated from Upper Arlington High School in 1938. He attended Ohio State University for 2 years and then transferred to William and Mary College where he graduated in 1942, Phi Beta Kappa. While there he was on the swimming team, was editor of the year book and joined Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He then attended Harvard Medical School where he received his MD, cum laude, in 1945. After taking a surgical internship in New York City at St. Luke's Hospital, 1945-46, he served in the United States Army Medical Corps for two years, primarily in post-war Japan serving first as a base surgeon at Ashiya Air Base and then at Tachikawa Air Base as head of the surgical service. He moved to New York City in 1948 to complete a 2-year residency at St. Luke's Hospital. And in 1950 he accepted the invitation of Dr. Robert Zollinger to train as a surgical resident at Ohio State University. It was during this time that he became particularly interested in Pediatric Surgery. After this residency, he continued his career at Children's Hospital as a Pediatric Surgeon, earning the respect of colleagues at home and abroad. In 1969 he was named chief and associate medical director of the Department of Pediatric Surgery, positions he held until retirement in 1991. He was also director of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Ohio State University for 19 years. He was a founding member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association and served as its president in 1977. He was also a member of the following: The American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Pediatrics, Robert M. Zollinger Club, The Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, Pan American Medical Association, The International Society for Burn Injuries, The Lilliputian Surgical Society, and local and state surgical and medical societies. He valued scholarship, had a deep and abiding love of the arts, and enjoyed tremendously many outdoor sports. Skiing, bicycling, sailing and golf were particular favorites. All in the family looked forward to summer trips to Glen Lake in northern MI and winter ski holidays. Later in life he took up the game of bridge and became a skilled player. He is survived by his four children, Katherine Smith (Alton), Robert Boles (T.), Janice Boles (Jim Harrington), and Stephen Boles. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Carolyn Cabot (Rick); and many cousins and close friends. His parents, sisters Mary Katherine Boles and Helen Ann Hardy, former wife Belle Boles and grandson Mark Smith predeceased him. At Tom's request, there will be a private family service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who wish may donate in Dr. Boles' memory to Nationwide Children's Hospital at P.O. Box 16810, Columbus, Ohio, 43216. Not sure what to say?

April 20, 2019

I never knew Dr. Boles or I should say have no memory of him. That is Because I was only 24 hours old when I was brought to , at three ime named Columbus children's hospital. In June of 1966. When I was born I had something called atresia of the colon. My parents told me many times how fortunate we were that Dr. Boles was the doctor in charge. Not only did he save my life he gave me a normal life. I've had no ill affects from my surgery and I am very proud to say that I am a registered nurse. My mother always told me that probably came to me because of my time in the hospital even though I have no conscious memory of it. I had just come across his obituary and I just wanted to let the family know how many lives that he has touched. My heart is with all of you.

As a teacher and role model Tom had no peers. He was as meticulous in his op notes as precise was his surgical technique. He instilled a discipline of thought and actions that influenced my career as a practicing surgeon and teacher from my first day in Columbus in 1969 until my retirement in 2007. Even after training he was available by phone to counsel on difficult clinical problems. No request went unheeded.

My condolences to the family and loved ones. I did not know Tom well, though I did see hi occasionally at First Community's Rusty Singers.

Sincerely ,

I trained as a pediatric surgeon with Dr. Boles at Columbus Children's Hospital from 1971-1973.
Although in college, medical school and surgical residency I was blessed with several great teachers on whom I modeled my career, none had more direct influence on my craft than Dr. Boles. He was the best operating surgeon I ever met, and I tried to do everything just the way he taught me. For the next 40 years, every time I went into an operating room it was as if he were there with me.
A mutual friend told me that academic surgeons live forever through the people they train. Since that's true, Dr. Boles memory has eternal life.

It was truly an honor to be his head nurse in surgery at Children's in the 80's. He was a gentleman in surgery and enjoyed discussions of his upcoming ski trips. He taught so many and we all learned so much from him.

My sincerest condolences to the family. I was a patient of Dr. Boles in 1966 as an infant. The surgery he performed was life saving, and has allowed me to lead a normal life. As an adult I saw him in Grandview at Paul's Restaurant, and I took a moment to go over and say hi - he remembered who I was and asked how I was doing - any "complications" to which I laughed and said no - all was well. I thanked him for doing what he did and the skill that it took with technology being what it was in the 60's. To which he smiled and shook my hand. And again, I say thank you Dr. Boles, for myself and all the other children you helped over the years. May your path be painless, and your journey forever peaceful.
