James Morgan Obituary

MORGAN James Gerald Morgan, MD, "Jerry", died peacefully on December 3, 2009 in Reno, Nevada. He was 93 years old and had lived a long, productive and blessed life. James Gerald Morgan was born to James and Clara Morgan on March 25, 1916. He was the youngest of seven children. As an accomplished musician he worked his way through Wilberforce University. After graduation, he was a band leader and played throughout the midwest. He subsequently became a music teacher in Tennessee, where he met Vesta Martin. They were married in Chattanooga, TN. Shortly there after, he served in WWII as a Master Sergeant. After the war he went to Law School for two days, then subsequently enrolled and completed Meharry Medical College. Jerry and Vesta eventually settled in Columbus, OH where he practiced Family Medicine for over 30 years. Jerry was an extraordinary man; an astute listener who demonstrated a considerate, wise and caring demeanor; never to be forgotten by his patients. He loved God and loved his family and medicine. At 74, he retired from medicine and learned to play the organ, taking lessons at Capital University. In 1999 he and his wife, Vesta, moved to Reno to be close to his son and family. There he served as a church organist until he was 90 years old. Other family members who preceded him in death were sisters Myrle Rush, Genevra Hunter, Mattie Morgan, Elsie Morgan, Lula Howard, brother George and nephew Rev. Cecil Howard. He is survived by son, Jay, who followed in his field of medicine and daughter-in-law, Sherry; along with grandsons, Jayson, Justin, Austin; and many other family and friends. A Celebration of Life Reception for Jerry and Vesta Morgan will be held on Sunday January 31, 2010 from 2-4:30 p.m. at St. Paul's AME Church Wellness Center, 112 Jefferson Avenue, Columbus, OH 43215.

It was really to my surprise to learn, just today that Dr. Morgan had passed away. He was my doctor and my sister's and brother's doctor as teenagers growing on Taylor Ave. He was indeed, as I reflect back a gentle soul, with a beautiful smile. I really believe it was a permanent smile, you never seen him without it. Smile!!! He was also very kind. To the family your husband, and father was a gift from God, now he's gone to be with his maker. May God's peace that surpasses all understanding comfort you, today and always.

Dr. Morgan was my doctor as a child. He was also my family's doctor. He was a very good man. He talked to you like you were one of his own. He always had a soft spoken way and a smile when you were sick. You almost looked forward to going to see him. But he also loved to give those shots. He will be sorely missed by all. If only the current Doctors of the world could have known him, they would have learned alot. He always pushed everyone to be the best they could be. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I want to express my sympathy and condolences to Jay and Sherry and the family. Your Dad was so very kind and compassionate to so many people for so many years. I think his smile and demeanor itself healed many a troubled soul. Eternal Rest Grant Unto Him O'Lord and May Perpetual Light Shine Upon Him Forever.

My best wishes and prayers to the Morgan Family. I have so many fond memories of Dr. Morgan as my families physician. I cannot forget the wise advice he gave me for rearing my children. He was more than a doctor but a family friend whom you could talk too. And was never rushed. May the Good Lord continue to take all of you through this hour of sorrow and remember a much loved man.

To the Morgan Family:
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Jame Morgan's death. Growing up he was our family doctor on Mt Vernon and Taylor for many years. Even though I only knew him as "Doctor Morgan", as many did, I will never forget his inviting countenance and demeanor. As a man, as well as a family practiioner in the eyes of many, he will be missed by all who lives he touched, spiritually, as well as professionally. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

Wow, it is hard to believe Dr. Morgan is gone. I thought he would live forever! He was my doctor when I was a young child until I had a child of my own and was always full of life and smiles. I still tell stories about my office visits with him on Mt. Vernon. To his family, my prayers are with you and God Bless!

I'm sorry to learn of Dr. Morgan's passing. He had been my doctor for many years until his retirement. He was a very pleasant person and would take his time listening to your ailments. He lived a full life and now he can rest. He was a blessing and thank God for a person like him.
