Jeremy Hodge Obituary

HODGE Sergeant Jeremy Michael Hodge, 20, of Rushsylvania was tragically killed in the line of duty on Monday, October 10, 2005, while proudly serving his country in Baghdad, Iraq. A National Guard soldier of Bravo Company, 612th Engineering Battalion, Jeremy was an unselfish, hardworking leader who exemplified honor and duty. He was a 2003 graduate of Ridgemont High School where he was a member of the football and baseball teams and an active participant in swing choir and musicals. He will be remembered as an All-American boy who loved four-wheeling, motorcycles, hunting and fishing, watching NASCAR, and rooting for Mark Martin. He dearly loved his family and made his parents, family, and the community very proud. He was born July 7, 1985, at Yokota Air Base, Japan. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Don Schoenherr and Earl and Mary Lou Hodge. Survivors include his parents, Mike Hodge, Rushsylvania and Michele (Steve) Norris, Fredericksburg, VA; his adoring sisters, Alyssa, 18, Nicole, 15, and Denise, 12; grandparents: Dr. Charles and Sherry Arnett, Bellefontaine; and Ruth Bassett, Ft. Wayne, IN; great grandmother, Dorothy Wiegman, Ft. Wayne, IN; many aunts and uncles; numerous cousins; and countless friends and admirers. Services will be held Wednesday, October 19, 2005, at 1 p.m. at the Rushsylvania Church of Christ, 170 Mill St. and Co. Rd 50, Rushsylvania. Reverend Tim Sherer will officiate, and burial with full military honors conducted by the 612th Engineer Battalion will take place at Rushsylvania Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the church. Friends, neighbors, and the public not attending the funeral service are encouraged to pay their respects by lining the funeral procession route in Rushsylvania on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, the family strongly encourages memorial contributions to be made to the Ridgemont High School Vocal Music Department, PO Box 87, Ridgeway, OH 43345, or to the Victory Junction Gang, a NASCAR camp for seriously and terminally ill children, 4500 Adam's Way, Randleman, NC 27317 [www.victoryjunction.org]. MANNASMITH-SCHNURRENBERGER FUNERAL HOME, WEST MANSFIELD, [937-355-3341] is serving the family.

We would like to express our deepest condolences and also to let the Hodge Family to know that we recently sent a donation to the Victory Junction Gang in the name of Jeremy M. Good Morning. Here in Toledo, OH we do an event called "Walk With a Solder" to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. This year the walk is scheduled for May 25, 2015. I would like to get a special shirt made and walk in memory of Jeremy but if the family had reservations about it I would not do. I don't want to do it if there would be any type of reservation. Also once the shirt is designed and others want one I will provide the information to the person making the shirt so you can order them yourself. If anyone would like to contact me about this, my email address is [email protected]

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Jeremy, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Sgt Jeremy M. Hodge
Today is Memorial Day, many will attend ceremonies to remember those who served and gave all. Thank you for your service and ultimate sacrifice. I know your parents and know they raised a good man as evidenced by all of those who know you and those who have signed your guestbook. As you look down from heaven today please know that we will always be eternally grateful for you and your service. “Greater love has no man than to lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13."

From Your 1st Cousins & Friends, Charles, Alexander, Daniel Hoskins

May 14, 2008

Charles: I remember Jer best for his ornriness. He was always in trouble, even though sometimes it wasn't his fault. I remember all the camping trips we had as kids with our parents, and jer was always fun to have along. We liked to play football together, and he actually showed me how to be better at sports.

Alexander: Yeah, I remember, Jer's love of fast car's. I miss talking to him about car's actually. I remember all the 4th of July's we'd spend together swimming, cooking out, water fights, fire works, and fishing trips when he went camping with us. I miss tossing a football around with him. Man, we have a lot of memories with Jer and having fun. Jer was a lot of fun to be with and be around and go placeses with. I knew we would have fun if Jer was with us guys.

Daniel: What I liked about Jer is all the video games we use to play together. Man he was always good at them, and taught me how to play. He never thought I was to young to play video games with. This is also one of my 1st memories is playing video games together. I miss that.

Guess what we are tiring to say is that there was so much more too Jer then just being our cousin, or our country soldier. He was in fact our friend. We miss him!

You are remembered and respected. Thank you Sgt Hodge!

Jer,
We miss you. Hard to believe it been 2 years since you left us. Then again hard to imagine a day with out you for most of us.
As your Aunt I think your gift to us all was your laughter and your personality strength that you brought to us all.
My story of you Jer that I'd like to share (and it took me time to decided which one.)
Once when you stayed all night with us you were about oh 12 years old. Jer you made a profound statement. When asked to finally get to sleep, you replied "Oh I"ll sleep when I'm dead." I found that profound and told you " oh just get to sleep".
Well there it is. Profound and deep. That is the Jer I knew. The Jer we miss and will forever love. Jer, my wish for you is that you may now have that sleep and may it be eternally peaceful. With Love From Aunt Beth

Thank you, Hodge family for telling Jeremy's story through the Columbus Dispatch and these postings.

I didn't know Jeremy or his family... but from that grave marker picture and story in the Dispatch, it is clear that this kid was one of a kind. They broke the mold when they made Jeremy.

Mike, thank you for telling this story. The bond between a father and son goes unbroken. I don't have any military credentials. But from a son of a father, thank you for honoring your son in the way that you have. Jeremy will live forever in the lives of many.

Words cannot express the sadness that I feel for you and your family. Since I read the story, I've been wanting to visit the gravesite and pay tribute and say Thank You to your son. The emotional challenges thus far have prevented from doing so. That all ends today. For me, I can't think of any better day than today, Thanksgiving, to honor your son's sacrifice.

God bless your family and your son.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

January 3, 2007

To the Hodge family: From 2002 - 2006 I spent my time in the Ohio Guard helping get other solders ready for deployment, I met many soldiers from across the state, and possibly your son. They all had one thing in common, though they griped about the conditions and the red tape, they all showed up and did the mission. That is all that one can ask of a soldier, to serve when called upon. By this mark alone your son deserves to be called a hero. The fact that your son gave his life in the service of his country only makes this a bittersweet title to bestow on a deserving soldier. I hope that you always remember that your son's life was defined not by how it ended, but by how it was lived. And it is apparent by the many tributes here that it was lived well.

As Jeremy's oldest little sister it is so hard to sit here and read all the nice things people have to say about my wonderful older brother. Even though Jeremy and I alway fought about everything I always knew that he would do anything for me. Not a day goes by that I dont think about Jeremy and just sitting here typeing this, I have tears running down my face that wont stop. I cant go to the movies without thinking of him, I cant listen to certain songs with remebering times that Jeremy would play the same songs over and over and over again, and I cant watch a football games without think about how Jeremy would love to be there playing.
I know that you are up there thinking that I am acting like a little baby right now, but I cant help it. I will always miss you. I still expect you to call me up and call me a loser or to IM me a ask me how classes are going and how much trouble I got into last, lol. Wow! It's hard to believe it's been a year ago today that we got the news. I still feel the pain that I felt a year ago. I was so mad at god for taking you away from us. But I have come to realize that god had other plans for you. It took me almost a year to finally realize you won't be coming home. Yeah it still hurts knowing that you won't be back to pick on me like the olds times. I miss you alot and so does the whole family. Mom misses you alot! She misses you calling her mom and saying mom I'm home. You sure did make a huge impact on our lives. But I do know that we will met again and I can't wait to hear your voice and your laugh. From sports to music to everything you did you amazed us. a gift from god that was taken from us way to soon. It will be a year tomorrow that we received the news. The pain is still so fresh. I still hear your voice on the phone saying "what are you doing" saying I miss you is not enough. I know you are watching over all of us now.I know we will see each other again. I hope you know how much you are loved and missed by all of us honey, I love you Jeremy and I am so proud of you for everything you have done. Rest in peace my son

Sometimes i will just be driving down the road and think it's all a dream that you are goin to get back and stop by to see how we have been. But although you walking with angles and smiling down on us. You are miss everyday. We will meet again, and walk and laugh at every min. we are together.

I did not know Jeremy but have been made aware of him through seeing his truck and newspaper articles. We as Americans are forever grateful for the life sacrifice Jeremy made for us. God bless his family for their sacrifice as well. These men and women in the armed forces represent us well and proudly. Maybe we never forget them. Jeremy, you are a hero to us all. Thank you.

I didnt know jeremy all that well, but what I do know is Jeremy was one of these most helpful, sweet and talented people that I knew, and he had that sense of humour that everyone loved. I know his spirit remains here with all of us and hes watching us. May god bless the Hodge family

Happy Birthday to us!!
This year was very hard for me, as I know it was for your Dad too! On July 7th the words..what are we doing this year for our birthday, Mom rang through my head over and over! It was especially hard the crazy plans for your special 21st that you always talked about! God blessed me with a new little baby boy and I know that your spirit will forever live through him! I will tell him always how amazing you were and how proud everyone is of you and what you gave your life for! You will be forever remembered in my heart..never to be forgotten! You are our hero, Jeremy
Love always

Dear Hodge Family,

I would like to thank you for taking the time to tell me Jeremy’s story at the race this past weekend. Your tribute is just amazing and touching, I would imagine your son would be as proud of his family as you are him. Jeremy’s story and your tribute will be shared here, as it was the most touching. Best wishes to you and your family.

Thank you Jeremy for standing up for all of us, your country and mine.

It's so hard going day to day knowing your gone. I keep thinking your going to walk back into my life, but your not. It's been almost 6 months since we lost you and I just can't seem to deal with the loss of you. I think about you everyday. If I had one wish right now, I would wish that you would be back here.

Your truck is amazing too. Your dad did a good job of getting it done. You would be proud of him. I love you and miss you alot.
