Sheriff Karnes took me and two fellow students on a tour of the jail as an assignment for our POD class back in 1975. He was kind and joked with us when we went into the "drunk tank". I've never forgotten that and I have watched his dedication to his job down through the years...His work ethic was a true inspiration.

Words can not express what our "Deputy Dog" meant to us during our high school years. We felt safe and respected by you. You were "old school" and sometimes we needed that :) I'm sure you would have much rather been with your family on all those evenings but we wanted you with us. You will be missed but never forgotten as you are forever in our hearts.

Yesterday afternoon my husband Joe and I wanted to give our condolences to Jim's family during the showing in the afternoon. We didn't let the bad weather stop us from going even though we never met him in person and will always remember him from the interviews from his "Dare" programs, solving crimes in our city to the very end when the Annex Building was changed over to his name. I watched today's Service that took place at Vet's Memorial and I could relate what his daughter Brooke mentioned about how their dad was a great father to them and their father will stay in their hearts forever. I mentioned to Brooke that this will be my second Father's Day without my dad yesterday and I could tell by her looking at me that she knows exactly how I feel.At the gravesite today, even though everything wasn't shown because of the privacy that Jim's family wanted, the playing of the bagpipes, the taps and the flag handed over to Sandra brought back memories to what my family and myself went through in April, 2010 at the burial site of my dad. Before I end about what has been on my mind there is one more thing I want to say--it was our pleasure to meet with Jim's family yesterday after we walked by the casket. Until the day comes when Sandra and family meet up again together in Heaven keep your head high and your chin up and keep Jim's legacy going for many years to come. I think this is exactly what Jim would still want.

To the Karnes Family,
I am sorry to hear about your loss. I know the Sheriff was highly respected not only as the Sheriff of Franklin County, but as a person in general.Having served as a Deputy under him, I remember I would drive by his home while patrolling that area and would always see him out there tending to his garden. I would stop and chat and he would tell me about everything that he was growing in that garden.I am sorry that I can not be there to pay my respects, but my thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of sorrow.
