To the Hicks family my deepest condolences may God continue to bless you in this time of sorrow. I will cherish the days when John would come to Dallas to play the Cowboys. I would pick him up and we would go to get some barbecue and he would always say where are the real Cowboys that ride the horses. RIH my friend and fellow classmate at JOHN HAY HIGH SCHOOL.

To the Hicks Family: Please accept my condolences on your loss. I was a classmate of John's at OSU - where I got to know him as a fellow athlete and friend. We met up again at Glimcher Realty Trust and continued a friendship that spanned some 45 years. John was always there to help anyone who needed it and his humor helped got me through some rough times - on a personal level. Rest in Peace, My Friend.

My condolences and prayers to the family. I was a classmate of Johns at John Hay High School. He was one of the nicest guys I knew. Over the years I have seen him at our reunions and was a friend on Facebook. He had a great sense of humor and was always a gentleman in all the ways that mattered. He will be missed but he will remain a legend as an alumnus of our wonderful John Hay. RIP John

I was a sophomore at OSU when John took me under his wing. It was hard not to like John because he was larger than life with his gregarious and infectious way. John taught me a lot over the years, but it was the way he cared about people that forged our bond. He taught me what it was to "pay forward" and I will try my best to follow his lead. Rest in peace big brother.

What a beautiful man John was. He and my father, Albert Reissland became friends while John worked summers at Anheuser Busch. He was loving and kind to my siblings and I and was so generous. He and Tereseta welcomed our entire family into their home on many occasions . He will certainly be missed.
Love and prayers,Gaye Reissland

We were fortunate enough to live on the same street with John and Cindy. We got to know them well, and loved them both. John was a BIG man with a BIGGER heart. He took special care of all those people in his life and extended his loving ways to many others - he did not know a stranger. We were blessed to have had him as a friend and we send our love to Cindy and the entire family. We will smile thinkng of great memories of John.

Hicksy, was a man among boy's...I don't know how many times he called me and said "Ski..we have to help our brother"...so I would pass the word on to our Buckeye brothers about one of our own needing help and soon thousands of dollars were being sent in from all over the country....he helped Buckeyes that he played with...those before him and after him...he was our "Godfather'...his great joy in his life was being with his family, telling stories about the "Woods" and helping others. When in public you had to be stay alert because when Hicksy saw you, you knew the bear hug was coming...we lost a GIANT but heaven gained a saint..Woody and Bo better get ready...let's grieve for Hicksy a short while...but remember him.....forever......ts

John was a most gifted player & a most incredible man. He was a thoughtful man who never forgot the people in his life.
Jane (my dearly departed wife) and I
were honored to be with him in NY City for one of his many inductions. I was honored to be his coach at OSU, and his friend for life.
He loved his family, friends, and The Ohio State University.
His life will remain a legacy to all...
With Deepest Sympathy & Love,

I was fortunate to have worked with John for several years. The stories of his friends and football accomplishments were overshadowed by the wonderful stories about his children. He was just a big friendly teddy bear who loved to laugh and bring smiles to all. I am thankful for the time I was able to spend with him.

For his family, you were always foremost in his thoughts. For his friends, he was always dependable. For his high school and college, he was always there to help. For his teammates, he was the best person you could have on your side. We will all miss him as we all loved him.
