John Schooley Obituary

SCHOOLEY John P. Schooley, FAIA, age 80, a lifelong resident of Upper Arlington, passed away peacefully with family at his side Saturday, February 7, 2009. During a career in architecture that spanned more than 50 years, John was Chairman Emeritus of Schooley Caldwell Associates (SCA), a firm of architects, engineers, planners, interior designers, and landscape architects founded in 1944 in Columbus, Oh. He was born March 16, 1928 in Zanesville, Oh., son of John Palmer Sr. and Mary Louise (Roberts) Schooley. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Barbara, in 2005. John is survived and will be dearly missed by his children and grandchildren, Palmer and Merry Schooley and their daughter, Livia June of Houston, Tex., Lauren and Rusty Schuermann and their daughters, Emilee and Hadley, and Webster and Elizabeth Schooley and their daughters, Grace and Laine, all of Upper Arlington; as well as his brother, Thomas Roberts Schooley, his wife Nance; and a multitude of close friends and associates. John was a 1946 graduate of Upper Arlington High School and received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from The Ohio State University in 1951, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Subsequent service in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers led him to Texas, where he met Barbara June Heffner. Soon after, they both became residents of Columbus and began a wonderful and fruitful life together. John joined his father in the practice of architecture and proceeded to lead the firm through the completion of hundreds of commissions in both the United States and abroad, resulting in SCA receiving the American Institute of Architects Ohio Firm Gold Medal. He was also proud to have enlisted Barbara's talents as the firm's first interior designer. He served as President of AIA Ohio, AIA Columbus, the AIA Ohio Foundation and the AIA Columbus Foundation, and his contributions to the profession and his community were recognized with the AIA Ohio Gold Medal, the Professional Achievement Award of the OSU Alumni Association, and elevation to the College of Fellows of the AIA. His significant record of achievement is also recognized through numerous local, regional and national awards for design excellence. Some noteworthy projects include the Columbus Cultural Arts Center, the Upper Arlington Municipal Services Center, Lincoln and Morrill Towers and Hitchcock Hall at OSU, the United States Consulate in Lahore, Pakistan, the U.S. Information Service Building in Calcutta, India, the Gilligan Complex at the Ohio Expositions Center, Ohio Veterans Plaza and the Ohio Statehouse Restoration and new Capital Atrium. In addition to helping shape and define the built environment, he was responsible for several publications that promote architecture to the public. His enthusiasm for architecture and art infused his creative photography, for which he won several national awards. John and Barbara were ardent supporters of the arts community in Columbus, and particularly the Columbus Museum of Art, so he took extraordinary pleasure in the creation of the Son of Heaven: Imperial Arts of China exhibition. John also served on the Board of the Greater Columbus Arts Council. John and Barbara Schooley traveled the world extensively and energetically, sometimes exchanging experiences with architects of other countries, often sharing great fun with their children and a loyal band of lifelong friends. John was a great friend and inspiration to many, and a true gentleman. Family will receive friends at a tribute to John Schooley and reception from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, February 11, 2009 in the Atrium of the Ohio Statehouse. Tribute program to begin at 6 p.m. with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers friends may honor John with a contribution to the charity of their choice, in his name. Dear Schooley Children,

The world is a much poorer place with both your Mom and Dad gone now. For close to 20 years I conducted yearly Chi Omega Christmas wine tastings at your parents home for Barb's alumni group. Your Mom and Dad were such wonderful and gracious hosts. I most enjoyed getting there early and staying a little late so we could just hang around and chat. Both your parents were so unpretenscious and kind.

May time ease the loss, allow the sun to once again rise in your hearts and and make more vivid the memories of your dear parents.

John Schooley brought much work and talent together for projects around the world. It was an honor when he hired me along with Bob Caldwell back in the 70's. It was an adventure which inspired me to go to graduate school and on to projects in Europe. Thanks to John Schooley my time at Schooley Cornelius & Assoc. was the best job experience and a great time of meeting some fine people. We need more people like John Schooley & Bert Cornelius to inspire today’s professionals. He will be missed by all who knew him. I hope the many memories and stories will continue to comfort the family during this difficult time. God Bless.

To John's Dear Family,

Though I had seen John only a few times in the last 45+ years, the notice of his passing brought back many happy memories. I grew up in Grandview - graduating in "47 so knew John at that time in our lives and then John and my late husband were SAE brothers together at OSU. We shared those wonderful years and a few mugs of purple passion, too.

Your Dad was a fun person to know!

The circle keeps getting smaller.

Peace and God Bless

I was both honored and privileged to have met John when he came to my gallery to see David Hostetler's work. John was an ardent supporter of the arts. He was also funny, kind, and a genuinely charming man. My condolences to the family and his friends (I'm sure he had many). It was my good fortune to have met and shared conversations with John over the past two years.

Although I only met Mr. Schooley on a few ocassions, I was quick to learn of his nature. He was a very decent man, and extremely committed to his pursuits in architecture and the arts and how they might improve the quality of life in Columbus. Columbus has suffered a true loss in his passing. My condolences to his family and those others who were close to him.

Dear Schooley Family,
As a respecting colleague of John, it was disapponting to hear of his passing as to us he was too young. He was great supporter of architecture and the arts, and a leader in our profession. He left his mark on our community and we enjoyed he and Barbara socially. Regretfully, we cannot attend his service as we are in Florida.
May God bless you all.

I worked on the drawing board with John in his early years at Sims Cornelius and Schooley. I always admired his modern approach to architecture and his good sense of humor. My husband and I enjoyed our shared social lives with Barb and John throughout the years. Bert would have loved seeing all of John's many accomplishments and was proud to have been his partner.

My deepest sympathies,

Jeff Gordon

For almost 18 years, I was a professional colleague and personal friend of John Schooley. He was a gentleman and an ultimate architect who was a major mentor and critic during my career. He made me a better architect and and an even better person. It was an honor to have been a part of his life. He will be missed by his lovely family, his friends, and by the architectural community. Lonny and I send our condolences. I am sure that wherever John now resides, everyone is wearing a wonderful bow tie.

I worked with John at Schooley Caldwell Associates from 1990 to 1999, and the entire time I was there, he always went out of his way to stop by my desk and see what I was working on or inquire as to what house I was dreaming up at the time. He will be greatly missed.
