Kenneth DeShetler Obituary

DeShetler Kenneth E. DeShetler, died April 10, 2017. Born August 17, 1928 in Toledo, Oh., he was the fifth of 6 children born to Leo and Elsie (Caldwell) DeShetler. Ken grew up in Toledo and like his siblings, he graduated from Waite High School. After partially subsidizing his college education via the pool halls of East Toledo, he served in the US Air Force in Erding, Germany. On his return to Ohio, he graduated with a B.B.A. in Economics from Toledo University, followed by a Juris Doctorate from Ohio State University. He was president of the Legal Fraternity, Phi Delta Phi. His first law practice consisted of a desk in the back room of his father's business, "DeShetler Heating". Ken served as assistant city law director, chief prosecuting attorney and municipal judge in Toledo. He served as Insurance Commissioner for the State of Ohio. Ken was the VP of legislative and regulatory affairs, then corporate relations for Nationwide Insurance Company in Columbus, OH. Ken is survived by the love of his life, wife, Susan; his admiring children, Laura (Chris Newsom) and Dana (Teresa) DeShetler; beloved grandsons, Daniel and Alejandro; sisters-in-law Shirlie DeShetler, Mary Ann (Herb) Goetz, and Jayne (David) Schooler; cherished nieces and nephews; and brother in crimes of irreverence, Dr. Lon Castle. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings. Those whose lives he touched span the globe. He was a mentor, legal counsel, haggler, confidant, storyteller, judge, pool hall colleague, chef, fly fisherman, artist, life coach, interior decorator, Buckeye fan, intellectual, prankster, and dear friend. The family requests that in lieu of donations; hug your son and putter in the hardware store with him, buy a racehorse, teach your grandsons to fly fish, walk in Monet's garden, go sockless to cocktail parties, quote Oscar Wilde, live like gypsies, read law books as lullabies to your daughter, giggle under the covers and dance in the streets with your wife. This was Ken's life; unconventional, bold strokes, no regretsFor online condolences visit www.FullerNaples.com

A very dear customer/friend. He will be greatly missed by many. I was blessed to have shared with him a story or two in the short period of time I shared with this truly magnificent man. Truly another kind and gentle soul gone off on the wings of angels. One of his last statements to me was " hold the door open for me" my reply to him was your going to beat me their so hold the door for me. That was the kind of relationship we had. Thoughts and prayers to the family. Thank you for making me part of your family. I am honored to have known such a man. God Bless and Gods Speed. God love you Ken.
