In loving memory..
- A Canadian
February 4, 2020
It has been 6.5 years since that horrible day. My daughter was one of the 20 students in a class across the hall from your office, one of those terrified kids you shepherded into your office, locking them in, trying to keep them safe, while you yourself left to try to help the other students and teachers under attack on the floor below you. It was from your office that my daughter called me that morning, saying, "Mom, there's shooting on the floor below...we're locked in an office...I love you, Mom, and I'll try to call you later." My daughter is unable to talk to me about that day, so it's taken all of these years to try to figure out the details concerning her class, the 3rd floor students. Who was the professor who locked her class in his office, then left to try to help? Who was her professor? I still don't know that one. But today I learned that it was you who herded her and her classmates into your office, locking them in, trying to protect them from a madman. My daughter came home to me that day, safe and physically unharmed. I want to say "thank you" to you, your wife, your children, but that doesn't come close to being enough or to expressing what's in my heart. Thank you isn't enough...this is why we live for the 32, why we never forget, ever. Thank you from my grateful, overwhelmed heart. I will never, never, ever forget your courage and your sacrifice.

I am not a friend of the family but i too have experiened the death of a lovd one. Through my studies of the Bible i have learned that there will be a time when we will see our dead loved ones again. There will also be "no more death, sickness, or pain anymore". I hope that this information will comfort you like it has comforted me an dmy family.

Your name was mentioned today on Channel 13 news/Toledo. How you were a researcher at VT and a graduate of St Francis but your name was also mentioned because you were one of the "fallen" 1 year ago today. I hope your wife and children can feel your presence every day and know that you are looking over them from Heaven!

To the family of Kevin Granata:
I offer my condolences in the loss of Kevin. We are assured in the Bible that "God {Jehovah} is near to those that are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves." (Psalm 34:18) During this difficult time, God can help you to cope with the death of your loved one. Prayer has a tremendous value in calming our hearts and remember the memories of Kevin are forever etched in your hearts.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am the sparkle in the snow.
I am the shredded leaves that blow.
I am the sunlight on growing grain.
I am the gentle summer rain.
I am the quiet bird at night.
Circling about; Taking flight.
So do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.

RISE UP SLOWLY, ANGEL

Rise up, slowly, Angel.
I cannot let you go.
Just drift softly midst the faces,
In sorrow now bent low.

Ease the searing anger,
Born in harsh unyielding truth
That Death could steal my loved one
From the glowing blush of youth.

Rise up slowly, Angel.
Do not leave me here alone,
Where the warmth of mortal essence
Lies replaced by cold, hard stone.

Speak to me in breezes
Whispered through the drying leaves,
And caress my brow with raindrops
Filtered by the sheltering trees.

Rise up slowly, Angel,
For I cannot hear the song
Which calls you through the shadows
Into the light beyond.

Wrap me in your downy cape
Of sunshine, warm with love,
And kiss a tear-stained mother's face
With moonlight from above.

Then wait for me at sunset,
Beside the lily pond,
And guide me safely homeward
To your world,which lies beyond.

Just spread your wings and take me
In reunion’s sweet embrace,
And we shall soar, together,
To a different time and place.

To Kevin's family and friends,
Our heavenly father promises at Isaiah 41:10-"Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not gaze about, for I am your God. I will fortify you. I will really help you. I will really keep fast hold of you with my right hand of righteousness". May you grasp hold of his hand and allow him to guide you through the coming days, months and years.
May you gain comfort from these additional scriptures:
Isaiah 25:8-"He will actually swallow up death forever."
Revelation 21:4-"And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."
My husband was lost on 9/11 and these scriptural promises comfort me greatly.

What a great uncle. Lossing Uncle Kevin has been one of the hardest deaths I have had to deal with. Through this trajedy I know our family will grow stronger. He was loved and loved all of us. I always loved to see him play with his kids. I know he will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. Thank you Uncle Kevin for all you have done here on this earth. A true hero.

To The Family of Kevin Granata-My deepest sympathy goes out to your family. Please know that you can gain comfort from the scriptures. Almighty God Jehovah has the power to resurrect our loved ones, for John 5:28,29 tells us: "Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out." Linda Granata, My heart goes out to you and your children, Alex, Eric and Ellen, during this time of deep sadness. There are no words just heartfelt sympathy. It is my sincere hope that the memories you made together will keep him alive in the hearts of you and your children. The Bible certainly helps in dealing with loss. The Bible reveals that God supplies comfort in various ways to those in need. For example, he gives strength to those who turn to him in prayer, asking for his help. May Our Loving Heavenly Father, Jehovah, be with you and your family.

To Joe Granata, and Chuck and Arlene,

This is a voice from your past, the early 1950's to be exact. I was then Joyce Dusseau.

I have been following the story of Kevin on the web and in the Toledo Blade. What an impressive young man he was. It would have been a pleasure to know him. His death is a loss to all of us.

You and your family are all in our daily prayers. We will be with you in thought on Saturday morning. May God's blessings bring you strength in the days ahead.

As a former Toledoan, I am deeply saddened by the loss of this high quality individual. He was a true hero in life and a positive force even in death. Sincere sympathy to his family and friends and may they cherish the time they had with such a role model. God gives us free will but He also has a plan for each of His children. It is not for us to question these events, but, rather, learn from them.

Kevin Granata calls the kids in
Including his son and some of their friends
He pats them on the back and tells them the plan
Then out to the field they take their positions, they stand
They are ready to play for fun and to win
Through good sportsmanship, no rules they’ll bend
Kevin cheers them on with love and respect
He goes over the list making sure it’s all correct
The research is important can’t make a mistake
He would not spend too many late nights with his family at stake
Do it right for the progress of knowledge, truth and humanity
He conversates on many things for he has lots to say
A loving father, a caring husband and a professor who gave all he could give
Kevin’s life is a life that he as a good man did live.

I am very sorry for your loss. I have experienced losses both anticipated and unexpected. When I was fifteen years old in my first year in high school, my mother died of melanoma at age 54 in December 2004; we were anticipating the loss. As with me, I am sure your loss is emotionally stressful for you and your family.

Your grief may ebb and flow. It has been said that each of us has this well deep inside of us that can be filled to the brim with grief. Every time we cry, we empty out some of the well. But the well fills again. The level of sorrow in your well may lessen as time passes, but it will never run dry. There will always be birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and those days when the well seems to fill to its brim again. Allow yourself time to remember and mourn. It is part of your healing. Grief is a continuing journey.

It is so shocking what happened on that sorrowful day
In my prayers you will forever stay
Although we never met and I did not know you
This is a poem for you to say my adieu
It is a shame you can not be with us today
Due to everything that happened I am still in dismay
Now you are up in a better place
We will never forget your honor and grace
Please look over us, protect us from dangers
You are missed by your family and countless strangers
I wanted to let you know you are in the thoughts of many
Condolences and commiserations are aplenty
I bless your family hope they stay strong
In my thoughts they will always belong
I say to you and the other decease
I wish that you all rest in peace

We hope you know how many thousands upon thousands of people are lifting you and your family up in prayer. We hope you know that will continue - not just this week but in weeks and months to come. Your loss is felt by so many. We never had the privilege of meeting him but yet in everything we read we know what kind of person he was, how much he was loved and admired. Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

I didnt know any of the people that passed, but this whole thing has gotten to me, alot. I am 15 years old and I'm a freshman at Crawford County High School in Roberta, GA. This tragedy has most definatley opened up the eyes of many people, even in other states far from Virginia. Even my school in this little town we know as Roberta are buckling down and making sure that our schools are safer. It has opened up my eyes to all the possiblities at schools, here in Georgia, Virginia, and all over the world also. My condolences go out to all the friends and family of the victims. I can't possibly begin to imagine what they must be going through. Stay strong, VT will pull through!

I did not know you or your family. But I don’t believe there is a person in the world whose heart has not been touched by this tragedy. There is nothing in this life that brings us more sorrow than to lose loved ones in death. Even harder to bear is when the lives of loved ones are lost due to an unexpected tragedy. The shock can be overwhelming.
Be assured that God promises that he…”is near to those that are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.” (Psalms 34:18) Nothing can bring us more peace of mind than the inspired words of… the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulations. (2 Corinthians 1:3,4) Take comfort and solace in the Bible's message as we all await the time when GOD…” will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:3,4)

I am deeply saddened by the lost of your loved one. At times like these it is comforting to know that the Bible tells us at Acts 24 verse 15 that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous. So with that knowledge, know that there is a hope that you will see your loved one again.

My prayers are with all of Kevin's family and friends at this sorrowful time. I know Kevin touched many lives while teaching at VT and he will live on through his students.
