Dutch never talked a lot when I saw him, but I'll always remember his love for NASCAR and Jim Gordon. Whenever I happened to be over during a race, he'd be arguing with his oldest grandson over who would win, and he was always rooting for Gordon. He loved his family unconditionally, that was obvious from the first time I met him. Dutch was an amazing man, and will be greatly missed.

To the Salzgaber family,
Please accept my deepest sympathy on the loss of your beloved husband, father, and brother.
I have fond childhood memories of a Salzgaber family who lived on a farm on West Lane Avenue, just east of Westmont Blvd. I live on Westmont with my father and mother, Carl and Hilda Fergus, and my brothers David and Marty (Marty was born in 1943) from December 1941 to 1950. I was 2 years old when World War II broke out, and I remember the day one of the Salzgabers brought over their horse so that we could have our back yard plowed up for a victory garden. Seeing a horse in the back yard was a big deal for us "city kids." So was being invited over one evening to see a newborn calf in the Salzgaber barn.
Some of the Salzgaber girls used to baby sit with us, and we would look forward to their coming because they made it fun. When they grew older, all of us were invited to their weddings. We felt accepted as part of their extended family. I don't know whether LeRoy actually lived on that farm, or if he was a relative whom we met while he was working at the greenhouse, but all of the Salzgabers were special to our family.
