1923 - 2021
WWII Veteran, Mary Lydia "Peach" Hughes of Columbus, Ohio liked travel, fast cars, maps, and magpies. Mary was born on March 7, 1923 and passed away at the age of 98 on July 28, 2021. Mary was a graduate of St. Mary's High School and St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing. She spent six months in post grad work at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. During World War II, Mary served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps as a surgical nurse. She wanted to be a fighter pilot, but they wouldn't let her. Peach met her future husband, Private John Francis Hughes, during those WWII years. Private Hughes then went on to medical school and served as a Captain in the Korean War. Mary was preceded in death by Dr. Hughes and her daughter Ann Hughes Allen. Mrs. Hughes is survived by her children, John R. (Deborah) Hughes of Columbus, Ohio, Molly (John) Kilb of Phoenicia, NY and Richard L. (Ann Marie) Hughes, MD, of Denver, Colorado. Peach's grandchildren include Hilary Delage, Caitlin Connelly, Jessica Federer, Kristina Musial, John T. Hughes and Aglaia Kilb. Mrs. Hughes' great grandchildren include Alexandra, Ryan, and Matthew Delage, Jake and Anna Connelly and Mary and Charlotte Federer. Peach's favorite song? "Hey, Jude." A Celebration of Life for Mary will be held Saturday, August 28, 2021, at 3pm followed by a visitation from 4-5pm at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST, 1740 Zollinger Rd., Columbus, OH.
