Matthew and I lived down the street from each other in Bluefield. Mrs. Scales was his aunt and mine. He was such a kind man. One of the true gentleman in our profession. Matt was capable, diligent, and a man of his word. Accomplished yet humble. The legal community has lost a true champion and great friend.

Professional, polite, helpful, kind, gentle, as well as a gentleman, were just a few of the characteristics of our Cousin Matt. He was a strong advocate for Freedom, Peace, Justice, & Equality for All. But above all, he was a Man of GOD.

Assalamu Alaikum My Brother,

Matthew was a great servant and a great friend. Matthew understood clearly what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. meant when he stated: "Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve". Matthew spent his entire life serving others from the time he was recognized as a hero with a Purple Heart for his Vietnam service up until he took his last breath on August 24, 2020. He served as a great husband, a great father, a great worker, a great student, who could, and did, use his knowledge and wisdom for the benefit of others, a great scholar, a great lawyer, who served effectively and honorably while placing the interest of his clients above his own, and a great friend, who was always there and supportive when there was a need. This great man was extremely humble and sincere. I will miss you my great friend. Joe Long

Matt was one of the kindest men in the Courthouse. He would go out of his way to say hello no matter what he was doing. His smile would brighten your day. This news is truly devastating. Sending my sincere to the Eldridge family. I have not seen Matt or Angie in years but remember them as a lovely couple. Mr. Rogers was very fond of them as well. Matt was always very professional and provided sound legal advice. He always had a smile on his face regardless of the situation. I pray the family will find comfortable of the many memories and times spent with Matt. Being married for 50 years is just an example of the solid man that he was. Hugs to all.

Matthew was consistent-always positive, kind and down to earth. He was a good attorney but even a better person and friend. He served this country and his clients well. I will miss this brother because he was a true brother in every sense of the word.

There is no one that I enjoyed running into - practically on a daily basis - more than Matt. Always had a kind word, and when he asked how you were doing, he listened to your response. May the many memories of this fine gentleman be of comfort to his family and his many friends. May God receive this gentle soul into His Kingdom.

Besides not one but two Purple Hearts Matt also received a Bronze Star. As a lawyer, he was a consummate gentlemen. In all of the years I have known him I never heard Matt badmouth anyone nor did I ever hear anyone even hint that Matt played fast and free with the truth. His word was his bond and the legal profession is poorer for his loss.

Our prayers and condolences to the Eldridge Family. We lost a great one. It was a privilege and an honor to know him as a friend and colleague. Always encouraging, always smiling, Matt was one who never met a stranger. He was the same great personality to everyone who came in contact with him, no matter their station in life.

Matt was a stalwart in his beliefs and he never wavered from his principles. You could count on him to stand for what was right, and to fight for the principles in which he believed. He was a proud advocate on behalf of those he served, a courageous soldier, a noble citizen, and a great friend.

He will be missed.

I was a Columbus City Prosecutor over two stints from 2000-2003, and again from 2014-2018. Mr. Eldridge was always a joy to see enter my courtroom. I thoroughly enjoyed having cases against him, we would always exchange friendly words, and that continued even after I left the office and became a defense attorney. Seeing him in the courthouse always brought a smile, and a kind word. He will be missed by so many of us around the courthouse.

Matt was a brother in arms, since we served during the same time period. He was a brother at the bar, serving the public as an attorney for more than 35 years. He was highly professional when he appeared in court, always timely, prepared and cheerful. It was a pleasure to seem in the court as well as to encounter him on the street. I will certainly miss him and mourn his passing. A light has gone out.
