My son's uncle David Ginn was flying an OH-58 Kiowa with Captain Mattingly when they took ground fire resulting in Captain Mattingly's untimely death. Dave spoke often and very highly of Captain Mattingly over the years and was never the same after September 13, 2006. We lost Dave February 2021 #22ADAY. I hope they are up there in the great beyond flying together again....never forgotten.

Matthew. I will always remember our short time together in London. Both tourists - you from the states and me from Australia.
When we said goodbye you gave me a letter and in the letter you said the words "if anything ever happens to me .... "
Such a waste of a beautiful life.
Pointless.
rest in peace Matty,

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and to also let the Mattingly Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

Matt touched lives in more places than you might think...two friends were recollecting the fun we had with him in Sydney, Australia and the warmth and hospitality he showed us when we were in Hawaii catching up with him and his buddies....we lost touch and we devestated to hear why....RIP my friend and can I say again, the waves were 25 foot that day on the North Shore, I had a 6 foot board...didn't see you paddling out!! My (and Elaine's) respect family and friends.

I am sure this has some meaning but I am at a loss to explaian what that meaning might be. When I went to bed last night the name Matt Mattingly came into my mind abruptly and with vividness. I know no one by that name. Several times today the name kept reappearing in my mind. I decided to google the name and that is how aI came to this site. Of course, I add myprayers to those of others. However, I remain convinced that there is an important meaning to this event. I am a Navy vetern who is now a 71 year old Pastor who lives in Naples, Florida. If anyone can help connect the dots so that I can decypher the meaning of this please let me know at [email protected]

Our family was depply saddened today to hear of this event from 2 years ago. I met Matt my freshman year on the intramural football field. As a "newcomer" to the league, Matt and the ROTC guys quickly showed us the ropes and how this league was played. This was back when the fields were up by the train tracks. Having spent hours everyday in the gym, I got to know Matt on somewhat of a closer level. I am not sure if he would remember me, but he made an impact on me and I will not forget him. I offer my sympathy to his family and close friends. Rest In Peace Fallen Musketeer.
You are a true HERO.

I was Matt's roomate at XU our freshman year in 1994. Matt always had me laughing with his antics; but, I also got to see his serious, intelligent and passionate side which continued to mature after college. I keep his obituary on my desk as a reminder of such a costly price and how close the war has hit home. I once read that 'Honor is the prescence of God in man'. Matt lived a rich life under that quote. Thanks for your sacrifice, man.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I attend the United States Militarty Academy and was doing an assignment where i had to make a time line of events that have shaped my life. I started writing about one night when my mother called me and asked me to sit down. It was the night i was told matt was killed.

I knew Matt through my father. My dad introduced me to him and I started mowing Matts lawn for him every saturday for a couple of months. I never really mowed his lawn becuase before i could finish matt would always throw a basketball at me and we would play for hours after that. Matt became a mentor of mine, and he inspired me to go after a west point or ROTC scholarship. He even sat down and helped me fill out my registration forms.

I didn't know matt very long, but his life influenced mine greatly. To those who knew him well and loved him I pray that you all know that his good deeds are still evident today. I will never forget him and send my love to his family.

To the family of Capt. Matthew Mattingly as I would like you to know that I often think about Capt. Matt. I served with him in Iraq with E troop 1/17th Cav. Though I didn't know him as well as I would have liked to we did engage in conversation and he at all times was the most respectful and professional of soldiers and leader. I know that he touched alot of lives within the Squadron. I pray that the good lord allows your family to find peace and I know matt is looking over you all. God Bless you all.

To the family and friends of Matt,

I first met Matt during XU freshman orientation. Before even knowing who he was he was already asking about Ranger Challenge, Pershing Rifles and Airborne School. Based on that initial impression I immediately knew that he was destined to lead.

I knew Matt for 3 years at XU as I was one year his senior. What always impressed me about Matt was his resilience and determination. Nothing was beyond his reach. He struggled with chemistry but willed himself to success. He maximized his awkward running style and became a PT stud. He dedicated himself his freshman year to get selected for Airborne school. He did himself one better by completing both Airborne and Air Assault school in one summer, a feat that is rarely, if ever, accomplished. His singular goal upon graduation was to go Aviation and of course he succeeded.

Not even the restrains of mortality could hold Matt from reaching his ultimate destiny of being among the Angles above us. I only wish he hadn’t overachieved and done it so quickly. He has transcended life and moved onto even greater things. Though he is no longer with us in the physical sense he continues to influence me and many others who got to know him. The 22 pages of personal testimonies are a reflection of just how many lives he has touched.

Your friend for life in this one and beyond. -Eric

This is a hard one..I miss Matt, from being my first platoon leader, going through numerous excercises from Fort Hood, to having a great time in Hawaii, convincing me that a Jeep was great to have, trusting me enough to let me hold his new truck during his first Iraq deployment, the many football arguments..so many other memories. A great officer, a great friend, and an upstanding Ohio fan. Brother we had some great flying times together. Well after finishing this Korea tour, headed back to Iraq for my 3rd trip...See you on Fiddlers Green Bro.

Randi,
Oh how time has come and gone so quickly. It has now been a year, and Matt's name still comes up in conversation weekly around our house. The boys never knew him, but the way they talk you would think they would of known him forever. Ethan loves telling the kids at school about the peanut butter and pickle sandwichs, which Aidan and him eat weekly. Matt has touched our lives in a way that is hard to express, but it has been an honor to have known him. We are thinking of you and we will be in touch.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Randi, Denny, Michelle, and Alicia:

Alicia, you most likely do not know me, but Randi, Denny, and Michelle may remember me, Anand, as one of Matt's close childhood friends. I would like to use this space to convey my deepest condolences and deep regret regarding Matt's passing.

I obviously knew Matt in a different age and time when we were both very innocent adolescents enjoying every aspect of our lives in Reynoldsburg. I always remember Matt as a fun-loving, inquisitive, and respectful person that enjoyed life to its fullest measure. I truly feel for your loss.

That being said, Matt seems to have made a very palpable difference in this world, particularly in our lives as Americans. It is a very difficult, and sometimes tortuous, battle we are engaged in in the Middle East, but it can be safely said that we wouldn't be enjoying any measure of the benefits we possess each and every day in the U.S. if it were not for brave warriors such as Matt fighting on our behalf.

May he rest in peace, and Denny, Randi, Michelle, and/or Alicia, please feel free to contact me at any time.

I had the honor of knowing Matt in college when I was a senior in ROTC and he was a freshman. I remember him as a stand out who earned respect as well as friends. I am truly sadened by your loss.

For the Mattingly family,

I am embarrassed to only now learn of CPT Mattingly's passing. I'm a Blackhawk guy and Matt and I worked together in Bosnia for COL Ball when I was in the 25th. He was one of our "Battle Captains." I really enjoyed his company there. He was full of humor and really great at picking out the truly important issues that had to be dealt with and pacifying those whose "top priority" tasks could be shelved for a while. He served his country well and will always be remembered as a Great American!

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

Friends and Family of Matt:

I went to high school with Matt at Reynoldsburg from 1991-1994 and lost touch with him shortly after high school. I was sadenned to read the news about his passing when I discovered it when fellow classmate Brandon Hasson has proposed a memorial to Matt and his fellow fallen soldiers at our high school. I was fortunate that throughout our times together Matt was a friend to me. I extend my sympathies to his family, friends and those that he has touched.

Friends and Family of Matt Mattingly: I had the privilege of going to high school with Matt. He was a friend and a leader to me - 12 years ago. I am saddened to hear this news and unfortunately, I didn't hear about this until reading about how our classmate Brandon Hasson wants to remember Matt and many of our soldiers.

What I remember the most about Matt aka "Fatty" from my years at Xavier is how funny and full of life he is. Matt and I would always share a good joke when we'd see each other during the parties attended off-campus. Of course, his jokes seemed to deliver the better punchlines just because he has always been good with people (and to people.)

While he was in Hawaii, he and I exchanged a few e-mails as he was going through some tough challenges. But since that time, we have lost touch. It is only today that I found out of his passing after running into another XU ROTC Alumni at the chapel here at Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

To the Mattingly family and all those who are close to Matt and were touched deeply by him - my sincere condolences. When you hear someone say, "He was a good man," it is often difficult to summarize what "good" means. But for Matt, I can only think of the best qualities one can find in someone who loved what he did and took satisfaction in a job well done. His ability to positively touch the lives of many around him is a testament of the greatness in his character.

Matt,

I was really looking forward to running into you at some future XU alumni function. Heck, you're one of the few rotorheads that I wanted to share some great flying stories with. I still think our C-130s can outmaneuver your helo's ... but we'll save that for a future discussion.

Since I know you didn't normally fly at the altitude you're flying right now, don't forget to transition your altimiter to 29.92 when you get past FL180. Not sure what you do once you get above that Class A airspace, but I'm confident ATC will give you a good frequency.

I'm cool with the raincheck, but when we do hook up again, I look forward to seeing you liven up that function and turn it into a true party! By the way, do they have any Dip up there? Lemme know if you need me to bring a couple of logs up there for ya - I'm sure they'll work better up at that altitude.

Cheers!

As my life just hit the greatest plkace I'd known, A few weeks ago I was attacked by a dog while running, and shattered my r wrist. I am getting better most days, and have a plate and scres in my wrist that i use y memory of what matt went through to relearn yhat which i took for granted. I thank you all for keeping on, and know that his spirit is so strong, and everpresent--even for those who didn't ge to know him all that well. thank u and bless you

Alicia and the Mattingly family,

I am devastated to hear of Matthews passing. We first met about 5 years ago in a Sydney hospital when I nursed him and his broken arm. He was always so caring and thoughtful and passionate about life. We met again a year or so later in London which was a very special time. We visited the tower of london and Buckingham palace and spent a lot of time mocking each others accents.
I will never forget it.
sending love and sympathies to you all.

Goodbye Matty, love Jane

To the family of Captain Mattingly,
I did not know your son. My brother and his wife spoke very highly of him and said he was a fine man and a great soldier. I am very sorry for your loss. When I learned of his death, my heart went out to you. I had wanted all of them to come home safe and sound.

I just wanted to say, I saw your son, brother, fiancee on Nancy Grace's show this evening and I was struck by how much he looked like my own brother who just returned home from Iraq and is stationed in Fort Bragg. Losing Matthew is all of our pain, all of our heart's pride. You are in my thoughts tonight, and I want to thank you for your son and what a true man and inspiration he is to my family.

A typed message seems so impersonal and inadequate when trying to express condolences for your great loss. From reading these messages, it is readily apparent what a great leader, aviator, friend, and man your Matt was. I grieve for you and for Matt, not only because of his sacrifice for those like me that didn't even know him, or for all those great things he was, but moreover for what he would one-day become and all the special things he was destined to do in his life. 1/17th CAV pilots have always been something special. Just reading these messages lets me know Matt was a very special man. Having been a pilot in B and C Troop of the 1/17th Cav 20 years ago, I have seen first hand what special people such men are, and moreover what great potential CAV pilots have and what they can become. Love each other and don't let Matt be forgotten. (ex-CPT, but always CAV)

I am so sorry for the Mattingly families loss. I did not have the pleasure to know Matthew, but it is obvious that he was an amazing individual. Our country is made greater by men such as Matthew whose dedication, honor, and service inspire so many, and protect us all. Our family has never met you Matthew, but we all love you. May God bring peace to your families aching hearts. My prayers are for you all. May God Bless you.

Alicia and Mattingly Family

Please accept my sincere condolences over the loss of beloved Matt. I had the privilege of meeting Alicia at a training a couple of years ago. Although I never had the opportunity to meet Matt, Alicia spoke so very highly of him I feel as if I knew him. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Alicia, and your extended family, the Mattinglys.

Dear Mattingly Family,

I can not imagine the pain you must be going through with the passing of your son. I knew Matt well in HS as we played football together. Matt played left guard and I played left tackle and together we made a great tandem on the O-line for Reynoldsburg in 1993. I will never forget the times spent with Matt, as we would formulate gameplans to be a more effective line. He was a senior leader and it did not surprise me to learn as the years rolled on that he had gone on to be a leader in the U.S. army, the greatest team of all. Matt always brought a smile to my face, and I am still in shock about the news. I will always remember Matt as being a great person and true champion. Your son always made an impact on the lives of those he knew, and Im very proud to say that I knew Matthew C. Mattingly.

My deepest condolences to the parents and fiance of Capt. Mattingly.

I met your son on august 22, at Fort Bragg before deploying. My son was also deploying that day under Capt. Mattingly's command. He was so kind to me in reassuring me that he would watch over him. My son was very saddened by his tragic death and still speaks of him with deep respect. I am very happy to have had the opportunity to meet your son.

Jesus said there would be a resurrection both of righteous and unrighteous. We have the assured expectation of one day, in the near future, being able to embrace our dear loved ones once again.

Jehovah will remember Matthew in that great day.

My sympathy to all of those who knew and loved Matt. I had the honor of meeting him when he was in the ROTC at XU with my son, Jeff Brown. He has made the greatest sacrifice one can make for his country. I pray that your memories of him will bring smiles to you in the future and hope that knowing so many care and pray for you will help you in your grief.
