The school children of the past, present and future of Westerville have suffered a tremendous loss.
Ned Mosher taught many of us in the community the importance and magic of nature as well as the history of this area and as he told me recently some skills on the basketball court as he at one time coached in the middle school.
As a teacher in the Westerville School system Ned made learning fun and memorable. He developed an outdoor education program that put students in the woods, the orchards and at the lakes of the area. He was irreplaceable after he retired. Even after his retirement he shared his knowledge by volunteering in classrooms and schools or any time someone needed him.
I have worked closely with Ned for the past 9 years as we developed an educational experience at the cabin located at McVay School.
He was always there for me when I needed a fire built, a hole dug or a board reattached. He was also there for the children as he taught them about making apple cider or maple syrup or how the cabin was built.
Every day I spent with him I learned something new and I am sure anyone who spent time with him would tell you the same.
Ned was a legend in his own time. (Although so modest he would blush at that statement.) He will be sorely missed by his wife and family but also by so many others whose lives he has touched.
Please know though that every time you share a nature fact with your child or grandchild or every time you reach to pick an apple off an apple tree and you twist instead of yank it off, your memory will flash back to "Nature Ned" who taught us all those lessons, and by sharing his teachings it will insure that his legacy will live on through us for many generations to come.

Ned was an inspiration to me. I had the opportunity to use the land lab he worked so hard to get and mantain. I also had the opportunity to attend camp with him and students. I lovedhis smile, deep voice, dry sense of humor, and practicality. I took a walk on Friday at Mohican State part and thought of him often. He will be deeply missed.

I would like to express my sincere condolences to you, Janice, and to the rest of your family. Ned was born to be a leader and a teacher! He made a huge impact on the students of Westerville City Schools, but also on the teaching staff. Throughout my years of teaching elementary physical education, I had the pleasure of learning from Ned in the many outdoor education workshops that he offered. Two of my favorites were the "Behind the Scenes at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium" and the Cross-Country Skiing workshop. No matter where I would see Ned, whether it was at school, at church or at a Lions Club event, he would always be wearing a smile and sharing his talents. I will always remember Ned as a humble, caring person, with a huge heart.

Janice,
I was sorry to hear of your loss.
"Mr. Mosher", was my daughter Loradell's favorite teacher.
She told him that whenever she would see him at a Lion's function.
She at one time told me he treated
her like all the rest, but ever mindful
of her handicap.
How he has touched so many young
people in his teaching and caring.
Now, teacher and student are together again.

Ned was a part of our lives in many ways. I first knew him when I taught at Whittier, and he was involved with outdoor education. He helped us plan many fun outings for the children. Next, he was a very important part of our little daughter's life. When we went to the Church of the Messiah, the only way she would go into the nursery was if Ned was there. He would carry her around, making sure that she had a hold of her precious, if not disgusting little piece of blanket! Finally, he was always a part of cabin day at McVay, showing us how to make maple syrup. He was a very special man, and we feel very fortunate that he was a part of our lives. Janice and family,
I have many memories of Ned. I remember at one of the Cider presentations at the McVey school for the 3rd grade. One of the boys held his hand up and asked "are you brothers?'. Ned, just
laughed, and I proudly said, "yes".
I always enjoyed our times working together at the chicken dinners, the Log cabin and our good times at the tree farm. He will be missed by many. My friendship the past 30 years will leave many fond memories.
Sorry I won't be able to return from Fla. for Ned's service. You and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers during this time.
Love, Jerry and Wanda

I am so sorry to hear about Ned. We have a land lab that has been utilized by thousands of students over the years-thanks to his foresight. In later years he obtained external funding for a building at the land lab. I have many fond memories of Ned - most notably watching him run a tractor and mower over another teacher's tape recorder, hidden in the tall grass. He always greeted us with his half grin - followed by his deep voice. So long "Nature Ned". We were blessed to be able to work with you.

Mosher Family,
I began my teaching career in 1969 in Westerville where "Nature" Ned took me under his wing, helping me through my first year. Becky was also in my first math class lending me encouragement to succeed as well. So it is with regret that I read of his passing. We will miss him greatly.

Dear Mosher family,
I cannot begin to tell you how much Ned meant to Westerville teachers. My husband and I were two such teachers who always looked forward to Ned's adventures with our students whether at our school or outdoors. He was such a loving, caring "teacher" who gave of himself over and over again. I always called him Nature Neddy, because he was just like a vert smart, cuddly teddy bear with the kids!
Our prayers are with you all,

Beckie and Family-
I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Mosher was such a great teacher and person. His Earth Science class was a special learning experience for me. I have never forgotten it and it was 37 years ago. Great teachers remain forever in the memory of their students.

I have so many memories of "Mr. Mosher", starting with my high school biology class...not my best subject. He had to keep a tight rein on me as my mind would wander! The class went to the Otterbein campus to identify trees, and I still remember the smell of formaldehyde from our dissection sessions. After graduation when I worked for the school system as a bus driver, Mr. Mosher's trips to "the garage" with his wonderful maple syrup marked a special season of the year. His time and work at Church of the Messiah also bring back warm memories; he as an usher, while my husband and I counted the offering. He was loved and will be missed. My condolences and God's blessings to you all.
