Paul Stearns Obituary

Stearns Paul W. Stearns, 76, of Pickerington, died unexpectedly Saturday, December 28, 2013, after an accident suffered while working on his farm. He was born on March 9, 1937 in Avant, Oklahoma to Kenneth and Ruby Stearns. He was one of five siblings and, starting as a boy with a box of newly-hatched chicks, he set upon a life of starting and growing businesses. He worked very hard at everything he did. He pushed his family and everyone he met to step up and challenge themselves and him. Paul graduated from the Oklahoma State University, and moved north while working for the Manufactured Home Corporation of America. On September 5, 1964, he married Libby Woodard at Bexley Methodist Church in Columbus, Ohio. They started a family in Lansing, Michigan, where they raised their two sons. Paul founded and grew several businesses in Lansing. Among them were Spartan Oil Corporation, which he owned with the Maguire family, and, later, Valley Lumber, and Ammond Corporation, a manufacturer of automotive products. Paul also developed three auto care centers in the Lansing area. He was a proud member of the Lansing Chamber of Commerce, where he served on the board of directors, of People's Church in East Lansing, where he served as an Elder, of the Lansing Rotary Club, and of Walnut Hills Country Club. Paul believed in public service and served as the Chairman of Michigan Governor William G. Milliken's Small Business Council, as a board member of Lansing Community College, as Chairman of the Ingham County Republican Party, and as a delegate to the 1976 Republican National Convention. He also was a candidate for the Michigan House of Representatives. In 1992, he and his wife relocated to Columbus, Ohio, where they became members of First Community Church. Paul went on to found Sprint Lube Corporation, a chain of 10 oil lube stores. He was a proud member of Pickerington's farming and horse community. Having learned to ride horses late in life, he won several local awards for his cutting horse riding. Throughout his life and especially in retirement, Paul was interested in helping himself as he helped others. From local hospitals and colleges, to prison ministry, Emotions Anonymous and 12 step programs, he was happiest when he was with the community of people he called his friends. A seeker of knowledge and understanding, the journey of life allowed him the benefit of meeting and knowing people from all walks. Always restless, Paul was constantly involved with projects, large and small--with his spiritual and religious studies; with his family; with a person in whom he saw the spirit of God and wanted to help move forward in life and in spirit; with his beautiful farm that he and his wife, Libby, built and planted together; with his horses; and later with his grandchildren. By day, he was busy and active and outdoors; in the evenings, he was introspective and searching for answers to all the big questions. In his last days, he understood that the most important answer, both spiritually and personally, was in helping someone else. He is survived by his wife, Libby; his son, Dr. Jeffrey Stearns; his son, Scott Stearns and daughter-in-law, Carla; three grandchildren, Ellie, Libby, and Paul K. Stearns; and siblings, Virginia Rosebrook, and Bob and Jerry Stearns. He was pre-deceased by his brother Dale Stearns. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 2, 2014, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER EAST CHAPEL, 5360 E. Livingston Ave., in Columbus, Ohio. A celebration of his life will be held Friday, January 3, 2014, at 2 p.m. at First Community Church, South Campus, 1320 Cambridge Blvd., in Columbus. I just found out today of Pauls passing,I had not seen or spoke to him in about 13 years ,but he had a big influence in my professional life. He was my mentor when he first started Sprint Lube in Marion OH it was his 1st store. He was more than a boss or mentor though, as those of you that know him will agree he made a lasting impression on our lives, he will be missed.

Dear Libby, Jeff and Scott,

I just learned of Paul's passing and was deeply saddened by the news. Paul was a great fried of our whole family and an important mentor and friend to me.

Although we have not seen each other in many years, I think of him often and have great memories of our early forays into the political arena. I always admired Paul's commitment to his community and his desire to do good things for the people around him.

Although I cannot be with you today in person I will be thinking of you and saying a prayer for Paul.

Paul had a wonderful spirit and such an appetite for life! I met him about eight months ago because I attend many of the meetings he frequented, and he quickly became a key mentor in my recovery.

He inspired me to live one day at a time, especially in the face of adversity. I once shared a particularly trying experience for me while at a meeting, and Paul came up to me afterward. He leaned in with inquisitive eyes, and in a challenging and witty tone said, "How do you eat an elephant?" I shrugged my shoulders, tilted my head in curiosity, and waited patiently for an answer. Paul said, with a smile and a laugh, "One bite at a time!"

Paul's warm sense of humor and air of seemingly boundless knowledge and wisdom was inspiring to many. Paul was able to make a profound impact upon my life, and I am forever grateful to have known him, however briefly.

I send my sincerest and deepest condolences to Libby and the rest of Paul's family and friends. Although he is no longer here with us, he remains alive in all of our hearts.

Paul was a client and very good friend. We worked together for ten years. He was a good and honorable man and I am deeply saddened by his passing. He had wide and varied interests and I was blessed to share some of them with him. The world was a better place because of Paul. I will miss him.

Kathy and I were very blessed to have Paul in our lives. We both meet Paul and shared many meetings together during the period from the fall of 2002 through most of 2009. There are people that come into your life for a season, a reason, or a lifetime and Paul had a profound effect on both of us as we were working to become better in loving others and enjoying life exactly as God intended it to be. He was a warm, loving and compassionate man and I just loved the honesty, the wisdom and the sharing from his heart he shared with us and others. He always greeted us with a warm smile, an amazing hug, and a kind word. What a wonderful man that contributed so much in helping those dealing with life and the mystery it presents. We love you Paul and will miss you so much. Thank you for being the man that you are and will always be through your spirit. May God be with you and your family.

I am deeply saddened by Paul's untimely death. Besides being a client, I also counted Paul as a dear friend. I always looked forward to our time together and the opportunity to discuss issues of the day and also issues of faith. It is a great loss to this community but a wonderful addition to heaven.

Paul had a wonderful outgoing personality. He listened intently to what a person was saying, remembered and had an uplifting, loving comment at the appropriate time. He had a long encouraging memory, searching for the meaning. He was extremely honest. He will be greatly missed. Love to his fortunate family

I was privileged to meet Paul in his 12 step work. He rarely spoke very long but his wisdom and caring attitude were evident. I didn't know him long but he made a profound impact upon me...his last words to me on Thursday afternoon being..."You're special." Al A.

My condolences and prayers go out to his family and friends. I met him about a year ago and was lucky to see him about once a week since then. He was always there with a handshake, a smile, and a kind word. I learned a lot from him in the brief time I knew him. I didn't know him well, but I am honored to have known him at all. God bless.

I was privileged to have met Paul several months ago as he was looking for a venue to being an "Emotions Anonymous" group and found space here at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Pickerington. We spent a couple of wonderful lunches together talking over spiritual matters and the joys and struggles of following God well and faithfully. He was remarkable in all the ways his obituary suggests. But he was also remarkable in his understanding that to be open and vulnerable to God - whatever that might look like - was, finally, the only way to life. I suspect his whole life was a searching after LIFE - and he discovered along the way it wasn't so much about accomplishing as it was about relinquishing. I was anticipating a longer, more deeply developed relationship with Paul. I'm deeply sorry for his death - we are all diminished by it.
