Rebecca Veach Obituary

Veach Rebecca Monroe Veach, born July 11, 1942, a devoted wife, mother, scholar, and loyal friend passed into the loving arms of God on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 reunited with her beloved husband Gerald Veach on his birthday. She enjoyed reminding family members of their elopement which later produced three sons, six grandchildren, and fifty years and four days of devoted marriage. Rebecca spent her life in intellectual pursuits and community service. She grew up in Collinsville, Illinois and was the editor of the school newspaper and a member of the National Honor Society. She attended Albion College for two years where she was a member of Delta Zeta. After starting her family she returned to college to finish her degree at Sangamon State University in Springfield, Illinois receiving a Master's Degree in History and went on to work as the Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs for some twenty years. She later became the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. A keen master of language she authored Growing Up with Springfield and was the editor of multiple histories of Abraham Lincoln as well as medical texts. In 2001 she retired and moved with her husband Gerald to Columbus where she became active at First Community Church. A life-long Democrat she was a Founder of the Westerville Democrats and worked from her wheelchair to campaign for President Obama. A deep belief in family kept her connected to all of her relatives for her life-time that was challenged by Lupus and a stroke in 1998. She is survived by her sons, Timothy (Christina Kirk) Veach, Matthew (Ronda) Veach and John Tobias (Annette) Veach; grandchildren, Judson Veach, Maggie Veach, Emily Leake, Sydney Veach, Annaliese Veach and Vivian Veach; sister, Mary Kay Monroe; brothers, William and Mike Monroe and their families. A Service of Memory will be held at First Community Church, 1320 Cambridge Blvd., Columbus, OH 43202 at 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 21st. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts can be made to Columbus Dance Theatre, 592 E.
