Robert Foster Charles Conners

Robert Conners Obituary

Conners Robert Foster Charles Conners, died peacefully at his Marco Island, FL home on November 23, 2014. Bob was born on December 12, 1933 in Clearfield, PA to Robert Charles Conners and Zona Foster Conners. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Mary Ann Conners. Bob graduated from St. Marys Central Catholic High School in St. Marys, PA (1952), and received a BA in Aviation and Communications from The Ohio State University (1986). BC was a preeminent radio broadcaster. His 60+ year career began in high school at WKBI in St. Marys, PA and continued at WJET in Erie, PA. He served in the United States Army from 1956-58. He returned to broadcasting on the west coast at KSON and KDEO in San Diego, CA then with WEEP in Pittsburgh, PA. He came to Columbus in 1964 to work at WTVN and called central Ohio home ever since. His tenure in the morning slot at WTVN began in 1978 and lasted until his retirement in 2011. Well known for the Rally in the Alley, Hiney Gate, and his top rated Saturday morning call-in show, Bob touched central Ohio like no other. There are too many close friends, colleagues and associates to name, but Bob would say he didn't like any of you anyways. BC had a lifelong interest in aviation and was an instrument-rated pilot. He belonged to the Confederate Air Force and announced many air shows at Rickenbacker AFB. He was an active member in the Irish community with the Shamrock Club of Columbus and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Columbus, as well as a long time supporter and promoter of the Charity Newsies and the Boys and Girls Club of Central Ohio. Survived by brothers, Tom Conners of Altoona, PA and Dan Conners (Kathleen) of San Luis Obispo, CA; wife of 37 years, Linda of Marco Island, FL.; children, Kevin (Rachel), Michael (Lori), Mark, and Kathryn Beck (David), all of Columbus, OH; 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Although his professional life was very public, Bob wished his death to be private. As Bob frequently quipped that "it is better to be seen than viewed", there will be no funeral or memorial service. Donations can be made in his name to The Boys and Girls Club of Central Ohio, 115 S. Gift St., Columbus, Ohio 43215; Charity Newsies, 4300 Indianola Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43214; or St. Charles Preparatory School, 2010 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43209. Go Bucks, Beat Michigan.

Just learning of Bob's passing today. Deepest sympathies to the Conners family from a distant Foster cousin in Central PA. My family has always had the upmost respect for Bob and his siblings. His mother Zona was a special lady and a favorite aunt. She was the proudest mother and rightfully so...

RIP Bob...

I worked with BC, side by side, from July 4, 1969 to June of 1972, and thoroughly enjoyed his company and mentorship. Bob was good to me and to my girlfriend who worked in administration for FM. The girlfriend has been my wife of 43 years and Bob was always good to both of us. We will miss BC! Always fun and interesting, sometimes provocative, he was great company. RIP BC!

To the Conners Family
Our prayers and thoughts go out to you.
My husband and I listened every day to Bob. and saturdays.
We have been wondering how he was enjoying retirement.
I loved "Frontier Christmas" Bob used to play at Christmas time !!
I remember seeing him running around the Heiney Gate at the Holiday Inn on the Lane, football saturdays, and getting on-stage with The Danger Brothers. ,
the chats with Pat Pagano abour thurday dinners and his "mom". playing ,Wolly Bully and especially playing KC and The Sunshine band EVERY friday morning at 530 am !
He was greatly missed when he retired.
I'm glad Bob was a big influence, and part of the Columbus Community for so long. He made a great positive impact.!
He made mornings easier.
You are in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers.

To the Bob Connors Family,

Deepest condolences on the loss of your beloved Bob. Bob was an institution, and had a deep impact on so many here in Columbus and beyond. He was a friend to listen to, especially in time of need. His contribution to society will go on long after the radio waves have silenced. We will never forget him.

Like so many other Central Ohioans, my days started w/ "BC in the morning"!! And I loved it. So many memories. But one of my favorites was the first time every late November/early December when Bob would play the comedy routine - "A Frontier Christmas". I knew we were in the holiday season when Bob played that skit. God Bless you and may your family find comfort in all the love from all your fans. Sincerely,

Thanks, Bob, for all the years of enjoyment that you brought to us here in Central Ohio (and to me in Pittsburgh prior to that). Although we met only once and spoke just briefly, I felt that you were a friend, because I felt that you understood people like me. I appreciated the opportunities to call in on Saturday from time to time, but more than that I appreciated your easy manner with callers, even when that wasn't easy for you. Harlow and Red Feather will never be the same, but will always bring a tear of joyful remembrance. May God receive you, and may He comfort your family. Rest in peace, BC, you deserve it. Thanks!
Sincerely,
Fred Glasser

My late mom and I thoroughly enjoyed having breakfast while listening to him on the radio. He will never be replaceable because he knew his job very well and did it along with caring about Columbus, Ohio.

It looks like God needed another DJ in Heaven this year along with Kasey Kasem, one playing music and one talking about anything people want to hear.

I miss you and Columbus does too.

BC was the absolute best and, in many ways, he WAS Columbus for all the years he reached out and communicated with listeners in central Ohio.
