Robert Drumheller Obituary

Drumheller, Robert J.
Robert J. Drumheller, Past Partner, Owner, Editor, VP of Gongwer News Service, Inc., dies in Palm City, Florida. Robert J. "Bob" Drumheller, formerly of Columbus OH, died suddenly on Saturday, February 13 in Palm City, FL. His age was 71. A graduate of The Ohio State University School of Journalism, Mr. Drumheller became a Statehouse reporter for Gongwer in 1971retiring from his ownership position in 2005. A facts driven reporter he earned and retained the respect of governors, department directors, justices, legislative leaders and countless others who walked the Statehouse halls. A fierce competitor for news, he mentored dozens of Statehouse reporters as they entered the profession. He served the Ohio Legislative Correspondents' Association, Central Ohio Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists as president and was a member of Press Club of Ohio. Bob abidingly engaged in his sons educations in school and life especially during their years at St. Charles Preparatory. After retiring he devoted himself to family, travel, nature, writing, riding his Harley and playing golf. Always an ardent reader he gained encyclopedic knowledge of relevant and trivial facts and always provided engaging conversation. As a storyteller, Bob prized under-noticed details and theories as a means to provide the avenue for his wit and to give him his best advantage in conversation. A man of great strength, he thanked God for his life each day. Mr. Drumheller is survived by his wife of thirty-seven years, Mary Margaret "Marg"; two sons, Jacob J. (Caitlin) Fairfax, VA, Jeremy R.(fiancee`, Katherine Lawler)Falls Church, VA; three grandsons, Rhys, Ciaran, Lucas; his many sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. A private service was held February 18 in Florida. The family requests contributions be made to St. Charles Preparatory School Annual Fund, 2010 E. Broad St., Columbus, OH 43209 or Power of the Pen, PO. Box 442, Richfield, OH 44286 in his memory.
