THOMPSON Robert E. "Bob" Thompson. With deep sorrow we announce the passing of Robert E. "Bob" Thompson, 68, of Grove City. Born November 10, 1937 and formerly of the Carroll-Lancaster area, Bob passed away June 19, 2006 at Mt. Carmel West Medical Center. Bob graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1955 and served in the United States Marines Corps, 1st Regiment Headquarters, 1st Maine Division at Camp Pendleton, California. After serving his country, he married his wife Jackie, returned to Carroll, and worked for ODOT District 5 in Newark. Bob joined Burgess & Niple Engineers and Architects in 1966, became a self-taught surveyor through correspondence courses and earned his professional surveyor licenses to work in Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. During his career at B & N, he conducted surveys of the nation's interstate highway system, the emerging cell tower industry, numerous downtown Columbus high-rise buildings, the Appalachian Highway, Muirfield Golf Course, and historical markers for state borders. His work ethic and tireless commitment to his profession earned him the respect of his colleagues throughout Ohio and surrounding states. Bob retired from Burgess & Niple after 34 years of service as Director of Surveys at the Columbus office. From May 2000 until his retirement in October 2002, Bob worked for the Franklin County Engineers Office in the Tax Map Division at the county courthouse. Bob was an active member of the Professional Land Surveyors of Ohio, serving on various committees and offices at the state and local levels. He was also a Life Member of the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping. He enjoyed participating in the PLSO and ACSM conferences, where he assisted in coordinating all aspects of the sessions. A founding member of the Bethel Road MacDonald's Coffee Club, Bob also greatly enjoyed his almost daily visits to Bob Evans Restaurants. His hobbies included genealogical research, history, and playing the trumpet (including the bugle during his enlistment). His greatest joy was from spending time with his grandchildren.
