Samuel Bone Obituary

BONE Samuel Wesley Bone, 85, of Dublin, 0H and Ft. Myers, FL. Sam was born December 14, 1923 in Morgan County, OH. He attended Morgan county schools, graduating from Malta HS in 1941. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942, earning his airman's wings and serving as a gunner in Patrol Bomber Squadron 204 based in Panama. Sam met his wife Bettye in 1944 in Oklahoma City at a YMCA dance and wed in 1945. They were married for 53 years. Following WWII, Sam attended Ohio State University receiving both a bachelor and a master's degree in Agronomy. He worked in the Extension department at OSU for many years, becoming a full professor before retiring in 1980. While at OSU, Sam traveled throughout the state sharing his research and knowledge of growing corn and soybeans using no tillage method with many farmers. He was also active working with young 4H members at a 4Hcamp on Kelley's Island. Sam was instrumental in helping to establish the farm Science Review, which is one of the biggest agriculture expositions of its kind in the United States. Sam and Bettye enjoyed traveling the states in their RV, finally settling in Ft Myers, FL where they lived for many years. He loved talking to people and met friends wherever he went. Sam left the world a better place than he found it. He was preceded in death by his wife Bettye. He is survived by his son, Gary of Gainesville Fl; his daughter, Kathy Guda (Bob) of Dublin, OH; and granddaughter, Paloma Bone of Gainesville, FL. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the O. R. WOODYARD CO. CHAPEL, 2990 Bethel Rd., where the funeral service will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Morgan County Ohio.

Just remembering all the great times we spent at Sam and Bettye's in Columbus (and with Gary and Kathy). I learned alot about football with Sam but wish I'd paid more attention to his agronomy lessons! Will miss Sam very much. Love, Janet

It was a pleasure and honor to care for Sam the last few months of this life. As a fellow Buckeye, we shared a lot of discussion about the football season. We also enjoyed talking about the weather and how it was affecting the farmers. Sam enjoyed hearing the Chicago commodity prices and was amazed that I could bring them up on my cell phone.
He will be sadly missed, but never forgotten. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

We will truly miss Uncle Sam at the Farm Science Reviews and the annual Bone Family Renuions. Wish I had asked alot more family history questions. Always appreciated his interest in the family genealogy and the wealth of knowledge he always was willing to share.
May the wonderful memories substain through this diffucult time.

Great Uncle Sam, you were an inspiration to many. Although our meetings were limited to the wonderful Bone family reunions, you always left a great impression on me. Quick with a smile and a story, you will be missed but not forgotten.

Uncle Sam,
Growing up & going to Grandad and Grandmas farm I remember you showing me around the different livestock. There were times that you thought that I was not moving fast enough so you took my hand and took off. My short legs couldn't keep up with yours and there I was with my legs straight out and air born.

Gary,Paloma,Kathy and Bob,
There are no words for a time like this but we wanted you to know you are in our thoughts and prayers. We didn't see much of each other thru the years but I will never forget the Thanksgivings that we all shared when we were young. It was one of my fondest childhood memories . Love, Melanie, Darryl and Olivia

Great Uncle Sam. Though we did not see you often, you were thought of frequently. I especially remember the times we spent talking about our horses and the day we spent together at the NBHA State Finals when you came to watch our son Christopher compete. You left special memories that will never be forgotten. You will be missed.

My family and I feel fortunate to have known Sam. We enjoyed talking horses at his visits to Quarter Horse Congress and of course, dicussing Agriculture with my husband. He was insightful and witty and will be sadly missed.
