Ted Manson Obituary

MANSON Ted Manson, 81, an Atlanta-area actor who appeared in such movies as "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby," passed Sunday of respiratory failure due to complications from lung cancer. He was born in Columbus, Ohio, October 23, 1926. He graduated as the Salutatorian at West High School in Columbus, and he attended John Carroll University and The Ohio State University. Before attending college, he served in the Navy during World War II, lying about his age so he could enlist at 17. Mr. Manson began his stage career with The Players Club and the Ohio State University Players in the 1950s. His acting career was put on hold for several years as he concentrated on his real estate development business with Jim Klingbeil and, later, Jim Trueman, founder of Red Roof Inns. With Klingbeil and Trueman, he built apartment and condominium developments from coast to coast. He and his family moved to Atlanta in 1970, and it was there in 1979 that he returned to the stage, working first with the Neighborhood Playhouse. He also appeared onstage in Atlanta with Marietta's Theater in the Square, Theatrical Outfit and the Alliance Theater. His film career began with small parts on television's "Matlock" with Andy Griffith, and "In the Heat of the Night," which was filmed in Covington, Ga. He had small parts in such movies as "Fried Green Tomatoes", "Runaway Jury", and "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil", where he worked with Clint Eastwood. He got his first big part playing Henry Royce, the billionaire grandfather in "Gordy", in 1995. But it was his performance as Colonel Murphy, the cannon-firing Confederate officer in the 2002 box-office hit, "Sweet Home Alabama", that opened a lot of eyes, and doors, in Hollywood. Other acting credits since 2002 include "Elizabethtown" with Orlando Bloom, "Foxworthy's Big Night Out" with Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy and as "Chip", Will Ferrell's father-in-law in "Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby." He will also appear in the upcoming Brad Pitt movie, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," tentatively scheduled for release November 2008. In 2007, Mr. Manson was inducted into the West High School Hall of Fame for significant contributions to the arts by an alumnus. Mr. Manson was preceded in death by his mother Margaret Bowman, step-father Fred K. Bowman, and brother Donald C. Manson. He is survived by his former spouse, Carol Noel Manson; daughters, Valerie and Stephanie Manson, all of Decatur, Ga.; and a son, Philip of Conyers, Ga. He has three grandchildren, William Philip, F. Jonathan and Sierra Manson. He also is survived by his niece, Kimberly Gillivan; nephew, Donald C. Manson of Columbus; and his cousin, Peggy Leddy, Grove City, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to: FAI Sonora, attn: Jorge Valenzuela, director, Save the Children, 931 Brave River Pl., Tucson, AZ 85704. It is so hard to believe it has been 11 years since Ted's passing. Every time I see one of his movies I brings a smile to my face and the thoughts of how lucky I was to work closely with this wonderful man. He will live forever in my heart.

I met Ted through our mutual friend David Head many years ago. Ted came to my school and did his one man show of Clarence Darrow for the students who were studying the play Inherit the Wind based on the Scopes Monkey Trial. Ted did a fabulous show for the students just as a favor to me, a friend. Ted was always like that - doing nice things for people. He is an inspiration to me and others because he always remained young, vital, and passionate about life and living. Thanks, Ted. I will miss you. I will remember you always.

Dear Valerie and Ted's family,
your father is one of the most amazing and lovely
persons I ever got to know. His heart was full of love, for the children in Mexico, for everbody,
he liked so much the contact with the kids, I learnt very much from him.
What a life he had! I'll never forget his big heart, his smiling eyes.
I miss him so.
Good bye, Ted

Philip, Stephanie, Valerie and Carol,
Ted was one of the smartest and most interesting people I ever met. He knew something about every subject ever mentioned and could discuss it in great detail. We first met Ted in Springfiled, VA in the 1960's, when he represented the Klingbeil Companies. He was a great negotiator, the best of the best.We have remained friends for over 40 years and will miss him very much. I cannot express in words what Ted meant to me and my family, but it was all good.

Ted was always gracious and sparkling, and we will miss him. On the FAI trips to Mexico he told us of his great love for his grandchildren -- his favorite role in life may have been as "GT." My 14-year-old son Charlie and I thought that being with him was a highlight of the trips. Only last February we were so entertained with his encyclopedic knowledge of dramatic lines and songs, along with his thoughtfulness about people.
We will miss you much, Ted Manson!

What an exciting life Ted had! I met him while traveling on the FAI sponsorship trips where his laughter and compassion were always abundant. He never complained, even when the roads were rough or the train ride long, and told me his life story which I will always remember as inspirational.

Dear Valerie and all Ted's family,
Ted's spirit will always travel with us, especially when we visit Mexico. He was truly one of a kind, bringing his luminous smile, inimitable sense of humor, and unending generosity to FAI, Los Compadres, and, above all, to the children of Mexico whom he loved.
Rest well, Ted

I found myself thinking of Ted recently. Wondering what he was up to. Well, to be honest I think of him everytime I see the word "fenestration." He taught me that fancy word for windows & doors ... he was an opening in the lives of so many people, the door to a wonderful world, a window filled with sunshine.
