I lived 2 doors east of Tom and Mary. I will never forget them and their little Dog. I can't read about Tom, without tearing up. I knew them for only a short time, but, the Memories will last forever

Tom,
You have been one of the great inspirations in my life, cruelly struck down early in your police career, only to raise yourself up and go on to make huge contributions to all of us at Columbus PD and to the citizens of Columbus. You have been a hero to me and so many others for so many years, and it so hard to accept that you are gone. We will miss you.

January 27, 2011

This world has lost a warm and wonderful human being. May God bless his family and friends.

Dear Mary, family & friends of Tom - My deepest and heartfelt condolences in this great loss. As police officers, we all give some--and some give all...Tom gave his all that tragic night in 1979...and had every reason to just give up after that---but not Tom...he put it in God's hands and continued on w/his life, making the best of wherever that journey took him...What a great guy Tom was w/a 'never give up' attitude. He will be greatly missed by many! I will keep you all in my prayers.

I have thought for a couple of days how to address a note to Tom's family, words can not describe how we all thought about Tom. We all only have kind thoughts about Tom , he was one of those people who passes through our lives and leaves a lasting impression, I haven't seen or spoken to him for many years, but as I look at the the CPD items hanging on the wall in my office Their he is, in his drawings where he always will be. God Bless him and his family. So long Tom.

Tom was an outstanding man and police officer.
The world lost so much in 1979 but he continued because of the nature of his character and the support of his wife, Mary.

January 22, 2011

Tom was a fine officer with both a quick wit and a unique spirit ! His police work was admirable and his zest for life was the kind officers admire and respect ! We will always remember his grand humor and his Irish good looks !

It is with great sadness and tears that I say goodbye to the man with the "Million Dollar" smile. I first met Tom on Dec 8 1979 when he came to Time Records to check on his vacation time. I still remember him standing by the window smiling as we talked and whenever he saw someone, that Million Dollar smile was there to greet them. I am disabled because of post polio syndrome so Tom and I discussed our issues at times and he was always such an encouragement to me.

When he became CPD's artist, I loved to stop in his office and look at his work. Such great talent, such a great man.

I pray that God will be with his sweet wife, his family and all his friends but rather than mourn our loss, let's give thanks that we were blessed to know this wonderful man.

May God give you comfort through the days ahead.

Tom and I worked together in the 70's. He was an excellant officer and a wonderful friend. I regret not staying in touch with him since my retirement, but often thought of him. I still have sketches that Tom made for me hanging on the wall. He made such a positive impact on my live. I will never forget Tom and what a rare and outstanding person he was. I consider myself fortunate to have known Tom.

Loving thoughts and prayers to his wife and family.

To The Hayes Family: I met Tom during one of my hearings when I was assulted in 1984. What an awesome person you are Tom. You flew in that wheelchair. I would have never gotten thru all the hearings w/o your support. Also, Tom was the person that got the handicapped card for the car for the handicapped people. Thank You Tom.

I worked with Tom in the 70's and 80's. It was on the old police Callbox paper that i saw his wonderful drawings. They still make me chuckle after all this time. I worked in the print shop and we printed his stuff. I will remember him always like he was a family member. My condolences to all the family. -Johann Duren

I knew Tom from being on "C" Co. for many years and from working walkie patrol on campus when he did also. He was an exemplary man, husband, police officer, and friend. He was especially helpful to the Grandview Heights Police Department through the years. There is a large void in our lives with his passing. Rest in peace my friend and "brother" you were an inspiration to us all.

I know of no finer person then Tom. Always positive regardless of circumstances. Always that wide smile he gave you and bone crushing hand shake. He was a person who made you feel you were an important part of his life. He'll be missed by many. Go with God Tom.

To say that Tom was an exceptional person is an understatement. He unabashedly lived his faith to the very end. His heroism was not because he was shot doing his job as a police officer, but in the way he lived his life each day after he was shot. He will never receive beatification or made a saint, but in my heart he truly represented what sainthood is all about. I believe that all the Angels in Heaven were standing at the gates welcoming Tommy with “Welcome Officer Thomas Hayes, you have fought the good fight and have given your all; you have won many a soul for the Lord, because of your example. Rest now faithful servant and friend, your journey is finally over.

May God richly bless and comfort his wife Mary, his family and all of his friends. Rest in peace Tommy, you certainly deserve it.

Dear Mary,
I was a brand new nurse 31 years ago when I first met you both when Tom was a patient at Riverside. I was struck by your devotion and love for him which has taught me so many lessons for my life and marriage. I always remembered Tom for his smile, laughter and self-effacing humor even in the face of such injustice. He taught me my first lessons about being joyful in the face of pain and to not harbor resentments. He forever had an impact on my nursing career and helped me to be the nurse I am today.

I love you Tom...Although it hurts to let you go, we all know that God has taken the best and now you can rest. I will always remember all the good times we had together and how our friendship grew over the years. You ARE my hero and always will remain so. Bob
