I met Bill & Elsa when, as a Cleveland Plain Dealer reporter, I wrote about their Bird Watcher's Digest.
He and she were very fine folks, so much so that when my travels took me anywhere near Marietta, I made time for a visit with them.

I am not a personal friend, I am not a neighbor.....you don't even know me....but I feel as if I know Bill and his entire family. I stumbled across Julie Zickfoose's blog once after hearing an interview on NPR and, frankly, it was her guy Chet Baker that made me come back day after day. Her descriptions of that silly dog and his antics helped me realize that our silly Fenway Underfoot Woodard was a completely "normal" Boston terrier.
And reading the blog opened my eyes, once again, to the small beauties that surround me. As I walk my dog I notice the birds along the bike path, the well-camoflaged deer (especially the new fawns) peering at me from the side of the bluff, the turkey that glided across in front of me, the geese and ducks in small harbor here in Port Washington, the sound of the sandhill cranes overhead, the red fox that popped out and surprised me one morning. The fledging great horned owls "hopping" along a tree branch as they began to learn to fly.
And reading the blog over the years also made me feel that I knew the whole family. How fun to be a silent participant and watch the "kids" grow up and to hear about Bill and Julie's music and birding adventures....to see the photos of the beloved farm with it's distinctive bird watching tower!
When Chet died I cried...and send a condolence letter but have no idea if it ever arrived. And then.....I sort of fell out of the habit of following the blog. Until this morning. I got up early and went for a walk with Fenway (we are expecting more SNOW this afternoon) and as I watched the red wing blackbirds and heard the cardinals calling something in my brain said "You should check out Julie's blog again." So I did.
Only to find out that Bill was gone.....way too soon....and is so sorely missed by his family and all that called him friend. And even a 70'ish lady in Wisconsin who never met him. Please accept my condolences and I hope that gathering with family and friends and that new four-footed cutie will provide some comfort for all of you.
And now I need to go find the box of Kleenex.

I just heard and am so ,so saddened - and so very, very sorry.
Such a bright light, he was - always a source of smiles and laughter-and of course a song or two - and then there were the birds!
He had a way of making everyone he spoke with feel he was truly listening and present.
Enriching the lives of so very many, his absence will truly be felt - far and wide....such a legacy he leaves...
Praying God's comfort and the peace only He can give - the peace that passes understanding ...and praying strength and courage for each of you - to face the coming days...
And, too, that the gifts of the coming spring be a healing balm to your hearts - the beautiful birds and daily wonders of nature - that were such a joy to Bill (and to yourselves) -may they bring solace to your aching hearts and hurting spirits..
He will be missed by all and so fondly and well remembered.

I am shocked and saddened of the very recent news of losing my childhood fiend Bill. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy on the loss of Bill. Memories of playing baseball across the street in the Park and jamming with him, his dad, and Bruce Demol will stay with me forever. What a wonderful person we have lost! God bless you and your family Bill.
