Douglas Stowers Obituary

Douglas Irving Stowers Sr., 81 of Guntown, died peacefully at his home on August 14, 2017. He was born May 3, 1936 in Natchez, MS to Dr. William Kurtz Stowers and Jennie Bishop Stowers. He graduated from Mississippi State College in 1961 with a Master's Degree in Geology. After working in the oil business for several years he moved to Guntown and became a farmer and merchant in business with his father-in-law. He later became a rural mail carrier and spent many years taking care of his patrons and friends on his mail route. After he retired you could usually find him on a lawn mower, plowing the garden, or fixing fences. He was a member of the Baldwyn Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday school and served as a deacon and an elder. After the church closed he attended The Guntown Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be at Waters Funeral Home on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. with Bro. Bobby Robbins officiating. Burial will be in the Campbelltown Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Bonnie Bryson Stowers of Guntown; Two sons, Douglas Stowers, Jr. of Wilburn, AR.; Bryson Stowers (Daniela) of Guntown; six grandchildren, Christy McElhaney (Nick) of Hernando, MS: Josh Stowers of Baldwyn; Justin and Alex Stowers of Guntown, Jonathan Pope (Shannon) and Adam Pope (Lori) of Olive Branch; six great grandchildren, Noah and Bryce Collier, Jillian and Isabel Pope, Jacie Stowers, and Sawyer Pope: his nieces and nephews, Bill, Jim, Karen, Linda, and Kurtz .

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, William Burns Stowers, Dr. Kurtz Bishop Stowers; daughter-in-law, Carole Stowers; sisters-in-law, Caroline Stowers and Jeannie Stowers and an infant son.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to either of the following: Palmer Home for Children, P.O. Box 746, Columbus, MS 39703 or to Guntown Baptist Church, 1617 Main St, Guntown MS. 38849.

Visitation will be Thursday at the funeral home from noon until service time.

Doug wore a heart-warming smile for all to see and feel. He was a dedicated man. Dedicated to his family, friends, and any endeavor he was involved with. All who knew him cannot help but smile with a tear at the thought of him.
