1938 - 2018

Joan Reeves Hughes, 80, died Thursday, June 7, 2018 at her residence in the Wren Community. Joan was born on January 9, l938 in the Black Zion Community of Pontotoc County to the late George Clester Reeves and Gladys O'Thelma Wilson. She grew up there and married Robert Paul Hughes in Columbus, MS. on August 29, l953, a union that spanned 64 years and 5 children. She was a faithful wife and a splendid Mother who nurtured her family and supported them in all their endeavors as a military wife. The family literally moved around the country many times while Robert served his country in a full military career with the U. S. Air Force. Okolona became their permanent home for 35 years before they moved 13 years ago to the tranquility of the Wren Community. Joan enjoyed being a housewife, encouraging her family, being a great fan of John Wayne and Elvis Presley, watching soap operas and westerns on TV and scrapbooking. She and Robert were longtime members of the First Baptist Church of Okolona. A gentle soul, she will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

A service celebrating her life will be held at 2 PM Today (Sunday, June 10, 2018) at the Okolona chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with her cousin, Rev. Billy Herman Reeves officiating. Private burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Pontotoc County. Visitation will be from 1 PM-service time today at Holland-Okolona Chapel, which is honored to be serving their friends. Her husband of 64 years, Robert, survives her in addition to their 5 children: Donna Hughes Jones (Jeff Stewart), Laurie Hughes Hood (Greg), Debra Hughes Carter, Matt Hughes (Kallie) and Mark Hughes (Susan). Mamaw and Papaw were blessed with their prides and joys-12 grandchildren and 30 great great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Andy, Christopher Hughes, Josh Long, Eric, Gary and Myland Carter.
