Robert Gilliland Obituary

Robert T. "Bob" Gilliland, 71, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2025, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born August 10, 1953, to James R. and Reba Tyre Gilliland. He was a faithful member of the Church of Christ. He taught music in the Itawamba County School District for many years, as well as giving private music lessons and leading congregational singing. His students had a hard time saying Mr. Gilliland, so they started calling him Mr G. This name stuck with him as he did musical gigs at many local restaurants over the years. Mr G loved music and his life was based on faith and music as he pushed music throughout his career. He also was a songwriter and recorded musical cd's. He also enjoyed fishing, traveling, and eating out with his wife.

Private family services will be held on Sunday, June 8, at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton with Minister Russ Crosswhite officiating. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Masonic Cemetery.

There will also be a public Celebration of Life visitation at the Fulton Church of Christ Annex from 2:00 -4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, where everyone is invited to come celebrate Bob's life.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Judy Gilliland; one sister, Emily Roberts (Elvis); several nieces, nephews, and other family members.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Jim Reed Gilliland; and his parents.

I will miss Bob very much . I was always complimented and proud that Bob always called me “ Cuz”. I was proud that we were related. Bob added much luster to the Reed name in Itawamba County. Bob was a joyful soul. I will miss him, but will never forget him. I’m sorry that I will be out of town in Birmingham with my grandchildren on Father’s Day weekend and will not be able to attend the service and celebration of life for Bob, but I will be there in spirit. Fondly his friend, Jack Reed, Jr..

Mr. G was a wonderful person inside and out. He was a wonderful music teacher. None of us knew what we were doing, but somehow he was able to stay patient with us. Mrs. G you was a wonderful teacher to me my 9th grade year at Tremont. That year, I learned Mr. G was your husband and I automatically loved you just for that. You both were wonderful teachers and made an impact on all who had the pleasure to be around yall. I appreciate everything you did for me Mrs. G. I hope you continue to shine light on others the way you and Mr. G did for me all those years ago. My condolences to you. Love, Samantha McCormick ❤

Emily, I can't even believe what I'm seeing. I'm so sorry. I remember the "Jam sessions" at your home when we were just kids. He loved his music and always did his best, didn't he? I remember how he was so hurt when Ms. Myrtle died, and his sly humor, his summer stint at Charm Step Warehouse, his and Judy's hospitality, that picture w/ARETHA! Judy, he couldn't have found a better person than you. I had just asked how he was at Mom's funeral. I wish you comfort and strength.

This world’s loss is Heaven’s gain. Bob loved the Lord, music and song and Mrs. Judy. From junior high to adulthood, it was a joy to sing with him and learn from him. Rest well my friend. Until we sing together again.

So much of my childhood revolved around Mr. G. Took his class until we hit Junior High but he also let me be his helper for 2 years. Great man I bet Mr. Davis was tickled to see him walk through those pearly gates. Ms. Judy I don’t know you personally but he spoke about you often and how much love and respect he had for you was amazing. He would light up and smile if he was speaking of you. Thank you Mr. G for all the great memories and just know all of us “kids” loved you. Every child should have had the greatest music teachers we had. God bless him and you and your family and friends. Mr. G and Mr. Davis were the best and always will be. I know he’s singing and playing guitar in the most beautiful choir. Fly high sir. You will be missed.

Not many families have a child that didn’t go through some of Mr. G’s musical lessons whether it was a private lesson or a class room full of kids! Teachers here there and every where have had their class attend a class with Mr. G as their music teacher! He always seemed to be in a calm and happy mood. So sorry for your loss! Praying for everyone impacted by his death.

Ms. Judy, I am so sorry for your loss. I know my daddy and Uncle Barry met him with their instruments in hand and probably having a jam session already. He will be missed! Sending love and prayers!
