Robert Wilson Obituary

Robert Lawrence Wilson, known by most as Bobby, departed this life from The Meadows Nursing Home in Fulton after a brief period of declining health. He was 93 years old. Born in Tupelo on August 5, 1931 to the late Lawrence P. Wilson and Dorothy Barham Camp Wilson, he was raised by his grandmother, Adah Barham. Bobby graduated from Tupelo High School in 1949 and attended Itawamba Junior College. After ICC, he attended Miss. State University to further his education on the GI Bill. Bobby married the late Tomicene Monts Wilson on Sept. 13, 1950, a marriage of 64 years until her death on April 24, 2015. A patriotic American, Bobby answered the call to serve his country during the Korean Conflict. He entered service on Dec. 27, 1951 and was honorably discharged as Corporal December 20, 1953 after being injured in the line of duty. He received the Purple Heart, the CIB, Bronze Star with Valor for his courage and bravery. Bobby spent over 25 years as an Insurance Adjuster for United States Fidelity and Guaranty (USF &G). He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Tupelo where he faithfully worshipped until his health began to fail. A volunteer and supporter of Meals on Wheels, he was an active member of American Legion Post 49 in Tupelo where he held most all offices over the years as well as 40 & 8. Bobby had a sharp, keen mind, enjoyed studying local history, sharing stories with friends and family about the "old" days of Tupelo. A great outdoorsman, he was the last living member of the Buzzard Road Hunting Club in Oxford. A golfer most of his life, he was actually considered for the pro tour earlier in life. He enjoyed fishing. He and Tomicene enjoyed traveling the world especially the Middle Eastern countries and made many cruises as well as most states in the USA as they drove across the country in their RV. A distinguished southern gentleman, Bobby lived a long fruitful life and now rests from his labors.

A service celebrating his life, with military honors, will be held at 2 PM Sunday, April 13, 2025 in the Sadie Holland Memorial Chapel at Holland Funeral Directors-Tupelo with Rev. Andy Ray officiating. Private burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Sunday and continue until service time.
