MARJORIE MOCK
DODGE CITY - Marjorie JoAnne (Hoskinson) Mock, 96, passed away on November 6, 2025 in Dodge City, KS.
JoAnne was born in Burrton, KS December 25, 1929 to Walter and Lorena Hoskinson. She married Bruce Mock on February 27, 1948 in Hutchinson, KS.
She is survived by two sons, Dean (Rhonda) Mock, Lenexa KS, Craig (Janie) Mock, Dodge City, KS and one daughter Kay (Doug) Owens, St. Marys, KS. Also surviving are one brother Doug Hoskinson, one sister-in-law Verda, 9 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Bruce Mock, her parents, four brothers (Don, Dale, Darry and Dick), daughter Diane (Mock) Rohrbaugh, grandson Brett Mock and great-granddaughter Paryn.
Everyone would agree that she was the hardest working woman you ever met.
JoAnne grew up on a farm near Burrton, KS during the depression which she reminded us about often. She said, "Looking back, it's clear to me that this catastrophe was the single event that shaped and defined our lives all the years I was growing up." She, Sis, had 5 brothers so there was no shortage of work to be done around the house. Her mom loved to garden so JoAnne did most of the cooking and house cleaning/laundry growing up. She wrote a short book titled "The Life and Times of a Farm Girl In Kansas". She wanted her grandkids to know what a hardship it was living in the country. Since she was an English major in college her story reads like a very interesting short novel. Some of the highlights are: one out-house, no hot running water, one sink that was in constant use by someone washing something, shaving, combing hair, etc. They had gas washing machines until electricity finally came to rural America. The eight of them bathed in a 2 ½ foot round tub with clothes hung on the back of chairs surrounding the tub for privacy.
JoAnne worked part time on several jobs including a telephone switchboard operator and lunch room attendant. She attended Hutchinson Junior College where she met the love of her life, Bruce Mock. They both graduated from Kansas State University and she has an English degree. She said, "we never borrowed a cent to get through school and we didn't have a cent when we graduated." She was a member of the First Christian Church, Dodge City her whole life. She sang in the choir with her husband for many years.
She made clothes for all her family. And not just a shirt or blouse but whole outfits. For Christmas (her birthday) one year she made several sets of doll clothes for each of her granddaughters. They are still treasured to this day. The family still talks about her fantastic pies, gourmet meals, foil dinners, fondue parties and just about everything else she ever prepared. She was always prepping and preparing food for her family, church and neighbors/friends.
Did we mention how hard she worked? She refinished furniture and all family members have at least one piece she refinished in their homes. Being a depression "baby", she had to be frugal and there are too many stories to tell, you have to ask the family.
Bruce and JoAnne loved unconditionally (Dean and Craig tested them on this). JoAnne: farm girl, Kansas State University graduate, choir member, devoted mother and loving wife, charismatic Grandmother, trusted friend, honorable daughter, inseparable sister, Great Grandmother, encourager and example to all. JoAnne, as part of the Greatest Generation, did not preach or quote bible verses but she did lead by great example. She cherished the company of others and was always willing to listen.
She was well respected by people who knew her best.
