NELLIE MAUPIN 9/18/1940 - 9/14/2025 DODGE CITY - Nellie May (Thurston) Maupin, 84 passed away on September 14, 2025 in Dodge City, Kansas. Nellie was born to Earl and Edna Thurston on September 18, 1940 in Hotchkiss, Colorado. She spent her early years in Codell, Kansas then moved to Natoma and attended Natoma High School and played basketball under the legendary coach John Locke and met and married Ival Ray Pruter 1958-71. They lived in Kansas City, Missouri where they raised their two children. Nellie married Rudy A. Turpin in 1973 and had 18 wonderful years until cancer took him. Her most important job was taking care of her children and spending time with them. She was a dedicated, passionate and loving Christian mother. She was opinionated, loyal and passionate about helping others. She was active in the Catholic Church for many years. Her favorite hobbies were family, painting, crafts and gardening. Nellie leaves behind her beloved husband of 26 years, John Maupin CPA of Dodge City, Kansas; his 2 sons, Mark Maupin of San Francisco California and John Jr. "Red" Maupin of Dodge City, Kansas. Nellie's 2 children, Tona Steinberg (Daniel), of Waxhaw, North Carolina and Troy Pruter of Kansas City, Missouri; and her only grandchild, Abigail Steinberg of Pineville, North Carolina. She is also preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Edna Thurston; brother, Marvin Thurston; sister, Pam Thurston and her niece, Wendy Stull. She leaves behind her sisters, Earline Simpson of Wichita, Kansas, Norma Stroemel of Shell Knob, Missouri and Elaine Anderson of McPherson, Kansas; nieces, Terri Goble, Kelsi Richards and Tina Sellens; nephews, Tom Reh, Jerry Sellens, Gail, Daryl, Doug and Kevin Pruter and respectively to all their significant others. Private family Graveside Service will be held at a later date in Kansas City, Missouri. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the ASPCA in care of Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, Kansas 67801.
