Belle Cochran Waters Powell

Belle Powell Obituary

Belle Cochran Waters Powell, 99, died at her home Monday, April 28, 2008.
Born in Thomas County, Ga., Aug. 23,1908, she was the eighth child of William F Cochran and Donia Franklin Cochran. All siblings preceded her in death.
Graduating from the public schools of Boston, Ga., she entered and graduated from a business college in Thomasville and, in 1928, married Caldwell Swain Waters of Savannah. They lived in Savannah, Portland, Ore., Natchez, Miss., and Bainbridge. Her two children were born in Natchez, attending the Carpenter Elementary Schools. In Natchez, Mrs. Waters, as a member of the Pilgrimage Garden Club, was a tour guide for the annual Natchez Pilgrimage, a member of First Baptist Church and the Natchez Bridge Club.
Moving to Bainbridge in 1946, Mrs. Waters assisted her husband in the management of three businesses: a produce market, restaurant and doughnut company. They were members of First Baptist Church and, in 1948, built a house designed by Mrs. Waters.
In 1967, Mrs. Waters married W.G. Powell Jr. of Cyrene and Bainbridge and they enjoyed life together until his death in 1995. Shortly afterward, Mrs. Powell moved to Dothan, to live with her daughter.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Powell was interested in music, gardening and fashion. In Dothan, she inspired her daughter to redevelop her gardens, playing an active role in that endeavor. While no longer a local garden club member, she became a life member of the National Home Garden Club.
Mrs. Powell is survived by her son, John C. Waters (Charlotte), Athens, Ga; her daughter, Donia Waters Isley, Dothan; grandson, John Greg Isley (Linda), Dothan; a great-grandson, Gregory Isley (Ashlee), Clovis, N.M.; and a great-great-granddaughter, Savanna Isley, Clovis, N.M.
There will be a graveside service and interment at Oak City Cemetery, Bainbridge, Ga., Thursday, May 1 at 2 p.m. The Rev. Bill Frank, Wiregrass Hospice chaplain, will officiate. Ward Wilson Funeral Home, Dothan, is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the following: Riverside Arts Fests Inc., P. O. Box 751, Bainbridge, GA 39818 or Save-A-Pet Foundation, 29 Jerry Drive, Dothan, AL 36303.

I was very sorry to hear of Ms. Powell's passing. Her son John Waters was one of my professors at the University of Georgia. Ms. Powell and Professor Waters are in my thoughts at this difficult time.
