James G. Hayward III, age 78, of Moody, AL passed away on August 16th, 2025. He is survived by his wife, Susan W. Hayward.

Jim was born in Philadelphia, PA and spent ten years of his childhood living in Mondello, Palermo, Sicily. When he returned to the U.S., he graduated from Haverford High School and Washington State University. Later in life, he earned his MBA from Troy University.

In 1969, Jim was drafted, and he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He trained in rotary wing aviation, flying the UH-60 Black Hawk and the CH-47 Chinook, his favorite aircraft. Jim served seven years on active duty in Vietnam and Germany and completed his 20 years in the U.S. Army Reserves. For 40+ years, Jim was an Army Civilian Flight Instructor at Ft. Rucker, training the next generations of pilots.

Born with a generous heart and a spirit of adventure, he brought joy and laughter to his and Susan's relationship. Throw in a childlike curiosity and a bit of mischievousness and there was never a dull moment. As a partner, he was steadfast and supportive, offering comfort in times of need and celebrating each moment of happiness. Theirs was a true love story and they were blessed to go through life with one another. He was her "Ducky" and she was his "Lovey".

Jim and Susan shared a love of travel exploring destinations such as France, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Newfoundland. If it involved planes, trains or automobiles, Jim was ready for the adventure. Jim also enjoyed Formula 1 racing, photography, technology and aviation news.

His wisdom, humor, and unwavering integrity guided those around him and left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Jim leaves behind cherished memories, enduring love, and the example of a life well-lived.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the doctors, nurses, therapists and caregivers who graciously cared for Jim during his illness. A memorial service was held on Thursday August 28th, 2025, at Leeds Memorial Park in Leeds, AL. Memorials may be made to Stand Up to Cancer or the American Stroke Association.
