Patsy was born Feb. 22, 1942, to Augusta K.C. "Buster" Cowan and Geraldine Boswell Cowan. She was her daddy's little girl and her mother describes her as being a good child that never gave them any problems.

Patsy attended Geneva schools grades 1-12. While in high school she was a member of the Math Club, French Club, Glee Club, Future Homemakers of America, annual staff, pep squad reporter and Beta Club Vice President. Patsy was also voted Most Intellectual Girl by her senior class. She graduated in 1960 and was an honor student.

Upon graduating from Westminster College, Patsy attended Central Wesleyan in Central, S.C., from fall of 1962 until she graduated in spring of 1964. She again graduated magna cum laude and with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She worked in the dining hall; was voted Most Intellectual; and was described as, "Elegant as simplicity and warm as ecstasy."

In the fall of 1964, Patsy began teaching english at Ponce De Leon High School in Ponce de Leon, Fla. During her first year she attended Troy State University to take the courses required to receive her teaching certificate. During that year, she met Hilton Byrd who she would later marry. During the 65-66 school year, Patsy would transfer to Vernon High School and teach English there only one year before returning back to Ponce de Leon High School during the 1966-67 school year. On Dec. 19, 1965, Patsy married Hilton Byrd. One year later she had her first son, Phillip David Byrd, on Dec. 1, 1966. Her second son, Stephen Paul Byrd, was born on Sept. 11, 1969. In 1975-1977, Patsy attended University of West Florida and took courses with an emphasis in communication arts. She received the educational media specialist (pre-k through 12) certificate from the Florida Department of Education and would become the librarian at Ponce de Leon High School in 1977. She also held certificates in social science grades 5-9 and a middle endorsement 5-9. Patsy was an educator 38 years in the Florida education system, retiring in 2002. While at Ponce de Leon High School she served as an English teacher, librarian/media specialist, junior class sponsor, cheerleading sponsor, SCA advisor, and a silver (25 year) member of Alpha Delta Kappa.

Patsy has attended Mt. Ida Congregational Methodist Church all of her life. She has served the church in many capacities. She has served as the pianist, adult Sunday school teacher, CMTH teacher (where she trained the junior quiz team to a first place finish at the Georgia quiz team competition in their first year of competing), started and taught the young adult Sunday school class. Under her leadership the young adult Sunday school class has raised and donated more than $5,000, to individuals in the New Hope Community and the Congregational Methodist Church. Because of her dedication to Mt. Ida and the Congregational Methodist Church, she received the Nona Hill Sunday School Teacher of the Year Award for the Congregational Methodist Church Denomination. She has served on many committees; attended and served at numerous conferences; and has always been there to help plan, cook and clean for church activities. Patsy has also worked at the West Florida Camp run by the Florida Annual Conference of the Congregational Methodist as a counselor, cook, chauffeur, lifeguard, banker and grounds keeper. She has devoted her life to spreading the word of God, helping those in need and lifting up all those that she comes in contact with.

H. Jackson Brown Jr. wrote, "Live so that when your children think of fairness, caring, and integrity, they think of you." Patsy Cowan Byrd is this example to her children, her family, her students and all those that she came in contact with. She cares and loves with all that she is.

Patsy was such a special person and she touched so many lives while she was her on this earth. I will never forget how very special she and all of your family were to Aunt Mavis. You were all so kind to her and she loved you all dearly. I know the angels in heaven are celebrating today, welcoming Patsy into their fold. God be with each of you as you adjust to this void in your life. I know you will miss her so,but my prayer is for each of you that you find solace in the fact that you will join her again someday. God be with you Hilton, Phillip, Stephen, Geraldine, brothers and all the rest of the family.

Mrs. Byrd as I knew her was one of the most kindest, caring teacher that I ever had. She was well respected by her students. One of my more memorable moments in high school was being in her library watching Challenger launch and then explode. This was a moment in history for me that was shared with Mrs. Byrd and it will never be forgotten. Stephen, Phillip and Mr. Byrd my heart goes out to you and I will have you in my prayers. The Lord will help you to get through this. Michelle (Curry) Gray

Dear Mrs. Cowan and all of Patsy's family, My heart is flled with memories of loving and fun sharing times I spent with Patsy at Geneva High and spend-the-nights at your home and ours. I share your grief and sorrow that Patsy will not be with you in this present time. However, I rejoice that many more fun times are just around the corner when we will be with her in the very presence of God. A time of no more pain, no more tears, no more fears and so many more negative sensations. Praise and Glory to God, all our sensations will be pleasurable, our energy will not diminish, and we will have the desires of our hearts. "I Can Only Imagine," how wonderful it will be to exchange this perishable body for an imperishable one in heaven. Love you all, Thadine

Patsy, you; along with your brothers, have been like family for so many years. Though you and I weren't close growing up that didn't take away from the bond that our families had. You'll be remembered by me; as well as, by others for the smile you had and the love that you showed to all of us. I'm sure that now you're now with Buster and the two of you are walking and talking. You're going to be missed but anyone who's ever known you will always have a memory to share. Bless you and thank you for the time that I knew you.

The class of 1960 of Geneva High School are saddened at the loss of one of our very special members. We have watched for the past several months as cancer took its' toll on her body but how bravely she fought to win against it. We were able to spend some special times with her in the past several months. Even until the last days she maintained that special smile of hers. Our prayers are now with her loving family who have been so loving and caring for her in this difficult time. May God grant you peace, grace and comfort during this sad time.

Patsy, You have been such an inspiration to so many and I am one of those. I was in your wedding 41 years ago on the happiest day of your life and I was sitting beside your dear Mother Saturday when you drew you last precious breath and flew home to be with your Precious Lord. You are irreplaceable to us all and we will grieve your absence and miss you...especially Hilton, Phillip, Stephen and Aunt Geraldine. You were so supportive to me in word and deed during the 10 years I cared for my precious Jerad at home. You will never know how much your love, prayers and support meant to me. You were always a kind hearted person and did only good for others. We will miss you and see you one day in Heaven. Trisha (Patricia)Spivey

How does one say goodbye to a sister? As I am making final plans to get in my car and make a long drive to be with my family, I am remembering all the times when we were much younger. I was the little kid 10 years younger that she took to the fair, to get ice cream, a movie. Patsy should be remembered for the many lives she has touched with her kind and giving spirit. As a retired educator, her influence is widespread and will be remembered for many years. It is an honor to be her brother and to be a part of the Hilton Byrd family. May you rest peacefully in the Arms of God.
