Serena I. Kalar

Serena I. (Davis) Kalar, of Dover, and formerly of Clayton, passed away peacefully at Silver Lake Center, Dover, on Saturday February 7, 2015. She was 97.

She was born in Clayton, the daughter of the late John Medford and Mary Ella Davis.

She was retired from the Delaware Home and Hospital, Smyrna. In addition, she had been a member of the DHCI Auxiliary; the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Clayton Century Club. Mrs. Kalar was also active in harness racing, working alongside her brother, the late L. Medford Davis Jr., for many years. She was also a member of the DE Standardbred Association.

She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, and traveling. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Norman B. Kalar; four brothers; and a sister.

She is survived by a son, Ralph D. Meluney, of Davie, FL; a daughter, Linda D. and husband Don Bates, of Dover; two granddaughters, Lori J. Fretz, of Camden; and Erica L. Bates, of Dover; two great-grandchildren, Sydney R. Bates and Olivia J. Fretz, both of Camden; and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Silver Lake Center for all of their care and support.

Services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday February 12 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call at Noon. Private burial will be held in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.
