Uncle Ance, was a one of a kind!
My favorite story is when I was about 9 and had just started to rodeo. I was visiting aunt Thelma and Ance in Elk Mountain. Ance took me up on the mountain on an old logging road. When we came to a mountain pasture there were 5 or 6 horses used to pull the cut timber to the road. The horses were huge! Ance said that we were going to put my bareback rigging on the black horse. I looked at him and his face was as seriously as could be. I said OK uncle Ance. We got out of his truck, got my riggin bag and started walking towards, the black horse. There boulders everywhere, I swallowed hard, my mouth was dry. I was thinking that this would not end well. We put my rigging on the horse who stood quite and very still. Uncle Ance lifted me onto that horse. I waited for him to start to buck. But, to my great relief, the horse just stood there. After awhile, Uncle Ance said this must not buck!!!. He lifted me off the horse, took my rigging off and walked back to the truck. Uncle Ance must have been laughing in side, but did not show it. I think he wanted to see if that skinny Coats boy, Wendell's son had the Fearless, self confidence to just get on that horse surrounded by boulders knowing that that Clydesdale would have dumped me head over heels on the first jump. I now know that the horses were work horses and would never have bucked! I love you Uncle Ance. I respected you and your calm demeanor. Rest in peace Uncle Ance. Love, Ward Coats.
