Stephen Patten Obituary

Stephen W. Patten, 61, died peacefully on May 9, 2022, in Westport, MA, from brain cancer (glioblastoma), surrounded by family members.

Steve was the son and firstborn of Clyde G. Patten (deceased) and Judith M. Patten. He grew up in Stamford, CT and his much-loved town of Westport, MA. Steve attended King School in Stamford, followed by college at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA. Although he initially intended to go into the military, he found himself working as a lobsterman and other various jobs before discovering his love of carpentry. Throughout the years he worked on various crews learning and excelling at the trade and building and renovating beautiful homes from Newport to Cape Cod. At one point, he had his own company, New England Homestead. He was very happy building and working with wood and often expressed his gratitude for having a job that he truly loved. Steve enjoyed sailing, kayaking, swimming, watching the surf, reading, a good fire, and Stratego. He was loved by many for his easy going personality, his kindness, his generosity, his honesty and sincerity, his terrific sense of humor, and his good-natured ability to inspire a wide circle of friends.

Survivors include his children, his daughter, Sadie Patten Milot (Dan Milot) and his grandchildren whom he adored, Sawyer and Lucie Milot; his son, Cole Patten (fiance Nicole Riley); his mother Judith Patten; his sister, Lisa Patten; and his brother, Scott Patten (Dana Patten, Lucas, Maya & Connor).

A Celebration of Steve's Life will be held at the United Congregational Church in Little Compton on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 11:00 AM, followed by a reception at the Acoaxet Club.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests donations to the following organizations: the South Coast Visiting Nurse Association of MA, the American Brain Tumor Association (abta.org), or the American Cancer Society.

I was one of Steve´s roommates at VMI during our Rat and third class years. We had many escapades together, good and bad. We were almost always together at the Mother I. Sadly we lost touch after the third year. I truly wish we had kept in better touch. I last saw him in the early `80s on a road trip to his house with some friends. That was our last good time together. I was always sure he would visit me back one day out of nowhere. He was a great friend and I have always missed him. Rest In Peace my Brother Rat.
