Daniel Colchico Obituary

Daniel M. Colchico
Resident of Concord
Dan Colchico, 76, entered into rest on April 27, 2014 in Concord; he was born on May 27, 1937 in Berkeley to Joseph and Cecelia (Palubicki) Colchico.
A life-long resident of Port Chicago and Concord, Dan was well known in the community. While attending San Jose State University, he was drafted by the NFL in 1959 and played defensive end for the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints from 1960-1969. His recent book, The Pride of Port Chicago, tells a candid story of it was like to play football in those days. He also sold cars, was a businessman and local store owner, as well as a commercial fisherman in Alaska for 25 years. He had a zest for life that kept him going, even to the end. He leaves a large family and countless friends who will miss him very much.
Dan is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy Colchico; children, Mindi Wroblewski (Tom). Joe Colchico (Jeanette), Dominic Colchico (Kate), Matthew Colchico (Yvonne), Gino Colchico (Alec) and Kristen Colchico (John Greeley); grandchildren Rochelle, Daniel, Talia, Zachariah, Cecelia, Kyleigh Jai, Maxx, Nicoló, Sonny, Juliannah, Leo, Michael, Troy, Jose Pablo, Sebastian and Fabiana. Dan is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00PM, Thursday, May 8, 2014 at Ouimet Bros. Concord Funeral Chapel, 4125 Clayton Road, Concord. The Funeral Liturgy will be at 11:00AM, Friday, May 9, 2014 at St. Bonaventure Church, 5562 Clayton Road, Concord. Interment will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Concord.
Memorials in Dan's memory may be made to the Bay Area Crisis Nursery, 1506 Mendocino Dr., Concord, CA 94521.

Dan was the man that my ex husband and I at the age of 16 and 18 would stop by his store and talk to before we went out for our Friday and Saturday night dates. He always said stay out of trouble. I got to see Dan at one of the Port Costa BBQ's a couple of years ago and I'm sure glad I did. He was a big man to me back then and will always remember him for his kind words to us. Sorry for his passing to all his family.

Dear Nancy,

I was so sorry to hear of Danny's passing. He was a very special man, and good friend to my mom, Tina DiMercurio and our family. About 10 years ago, Danny gave my step-dad, Tom Gardner, one of the 49er team helmets that he'd had autographed just for me. It is loaded with signatures, including a special one for me from Danny. I will cherish it always.
Sending love and prayers to you and your family.

There are no words to describe how I feel about Danny's passing. He was a constant, someone you might not see all the time but knew he was always there if you needed him. He was the son my Mother never had, he was a hero and a star to all of us who lived in Port Chicago. He started the Port Chicago reunion and it won't be the same without him. Danny & Nancy used to babysit me when I was young, and I love them both.
My heart & prayers go out to Nancy, the children and the extended family.

Dan was one "COOL DUDE," during his rookie season my dad got season tickets for the whole family. One night after the 49ers beat the Broncos 35-10, Dan was heading to the locker room and I asked him to autograph my football. To this day I still have the ball. Rest in Peace Buddy.

We send our prayers to the Colchico family at this time. We were friends of Dan Cochico, having worked with him with MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION every year at the Driftwood Yacht Club in Antioch. Dan was a great man and a wonderful humanitarian. He was also a wonderful asset to the 49'er team and family! GOD BLESS YOU ALL! Mikie & Carol Simmons

So sorry to hear Dan died, my condolences to the entire Colchico family.I grew up reading about Dan in CC Times - he is key reason I became lifelong 49er fan, we had Concord guy playing for 49ers in 60's, that was special.I recall when I watched him on TV he was fierce tackler, guys got up slowly after Dan hit them, like a piano dropped out of sky on them! Used to see him at the bowling alley sometimes, super guy - full of great stories. He didn't know my name - but he would kind of remember me, but Dan knew so many people. Just the fact he was talking me at all was a thrill, because I remember him tackling Jim Brown. Dan was really the prince of the city of Concord - in a way - a beloved figure around town - everywhere he went he would draw a crowd. Dan's with the Prince of Peace now, telling him those great stories. Two princes together, forever, so fitting.

Many words can be said about a dear loved one. How we frame them is up to us. When we lose a loved one our words run deep on how we feel. Love is a word that is used a lot but especially in time of loss. Be supportive of family and friends and show love a perfect bond of union. (Heb 11:35)
