Earl Singleton Obituary

EARL C. (RED) SINGLETON Earl C. ("Red") Singleton passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on October 31, 2003 at Woodside Terrace in Redwood City where he had lived for the past year. Born in Sacramento and raised in Petaluma, CA, he lived in San Mateo for over 50 years. Preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Maryon Singleton, Earl is survived by his daughter Judith Singleton of Fremont, son Stephen Singleton and partner, Christopher Teasley, both of Santa Barbara, sister June Catey of Chico and his companion, Daphne Copenhagen of San Mateo. He was much loved by many nieces and nephews. Earl owned a business, Auto Home Supply, on 25th Avenue in San Mateo for many years and worked at Breuner's in San Carlos for 13 years before retiring in 1982. He was active in the community, serving as a San Mateo Public Works Commissioner for two terms (1986-1994) and as an elected member of the Board of Freeholders who rewrote the San Mateo city charter in the late 60's. He helped to found the Brown Bag Food Program in San Mateo for Second Harvest Food Bank and continued as a weekly volunteer until he was 89. He had also been active with Boy Scout Troop 27, San Mateo Elks Club, Optimist Club, and SIRS Damian Branch 1. A long-time member of Transfiguration Episcopal Church in San Mateo, he served on the vestry, was head usher, sang in the choir and maintained the memorial garden. A memorial service celebrating Earl Singleton's life will be held on Saturday, November 8 at 1:00 p.m. at Transfiguration Episcopal Church, 3900 Alameda de las Pulgas, San Mateo. A reception will follow the service. Donations may be made in his memory to Second Harvest Food Bank or to Transfiguration Episcopal Church Memorial Garden Fund.
