Edith Schutzman of Walnut Creek, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 5. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Irving Schutzman, who died in 2019 after 76 years of marriage.
The daughter of Rose and Hyman Simon, Mrs. Schutzman was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1926. She would have turned 96 on March 17th. She met her husband at age 16, and eloped with him at age 17 in 1944, three weeks before he was sent to the South Pacific during World War Two. After working as a Comptometer operator until he returned two years later, she then concentrated on raising three children with Irving, who became a NYC elementary school teacher and later, a school Principal. After her children were grown, she worked in a Nassau County, NY Social Services office, rising to a managerial position, and also volunteered at Creedmore State Hospital in Queens, NY.
After Irving's retirement, the two moved to Rossmoor in Walnut Creek, where they enjoyed socializing with their many friends, playing bridge, and doting on their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Edith also enjoyed playing mah jong with her friends and knitting and crocheting items for friends and family.
Edith is survived by her children, David Schutzman (Carole) of Greenville, SC, Dr. Susan Ollar of Boulder, CO, and Dr. Howard Schutzman (Teresa) of Alamo, CA; 8 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will take place at 2 PM on Wednesday, March 9th, at Oakmont Memorial Park & Mortuary, 2099 Reliez Valley Road, Lafayette, CA 94549. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, those who wish to do so can contribute to their favorite charity in Edith's name.
