Jorge Rebata Obituary

Jorge A. Rebata passed away peacefully on February 13, 2008, in the arms of his beloved wife and children in San Mateo, California. He was a man who first and foremost loved his family deeply. Jorge was born on April 20, 1925 in Lima, Peru and graduated as a Civil Engineer from the National University of Engineering in Lima Peru in 1950. He immigrated to the United States in 1956 with his beloved wife Virginia and two small children by his side and made the San Francisco Bay Area his permanent home. He had an illustrious business career and worked as a successful Civil Engineer (P.E.) for Standard Oil, Inc., PG&E, Guy F. Atkinson Construction Company and Fluor Mining and Metals. After retirement, he and Virginia enjoyed a part time home in Mexico City where he worked as a professor of Engineering at the National Autonomous University in Mexico City. Throughout his career he managed large construction projects both in the United States and abroad, including in France, Norway, Iran, China, Northern Africa and Latin America. Jorge was active in his professional engineering associations, and volunteered his time for causes that he cared about including registering Spanish speaking voters, raising relief funds for survivors of earthquakes in Latin America and contributing regular letters to newspaper editors to share his political beliefs. Jorge surrounded himself with books that lifted the human intellect and spirit and was a devoted student of classical literature and music. He appreciated the arts and enjoyed playing the piano. He was an avid soccer and boxing fan. He is survived by his beloved wife Virginia with whom he was married for 56 years, and his four children, Virginia P. Rebata, George Rebata, Katrina Bowman and David Rebata and son-in-law Kirk Bowman and daughter-in-law Tracey Rebata. He will be deeply missed by his eleven grandchildren Elizabeth, David Thomas, Suzannah, Cassandra, Alexander, Christina, Courtney, Elena, Mercedes, Gabriella and Sophia. He is also survived by his sisters Leonor Rebata and Graciela Freundt of Lima, Peru and numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, February 22, at 2:00pm at Crosby N. Gray & Co. Funeral Home, 2 Park Road, Burlingame, California 94010. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the American Lung Association.
