Franciscan Friars, Province of Saint Barbara Father Kenny Scott, OFM, died May 25, 2010 Father Kenny Scott, a native of Oakland, CA, passed on to eternal life after a lifetime of working in Catholic High Schools, most notably his 27 year tenure at St. Elizabeth High School, Oakland CA. Friar Kenny Scott was the son of Anthony James Scott and Agnes Marie Scott, born on October 10, 1930. His family belonged to St. Elizabeth's parish in Oakland, CA, where he went to the parochial grammar school. He entered the Franciscan order in 1950 and professed solemn (lifetime) vows in 1954. He was ordained in 1958 by Bishop Timothy Manning at Old Mission Santa Barbara. Fr. Kenny's first and only parochial assignment was to St. Mary's church in Phoenix, AZ, for 4 years. He then transferred to St. Mary High School where he taught for 7 years. In 1966 he went to Serra High in Salem, OR, for 3 years before moving to his longest assignment at St. Elizabeth's High School in Oakland. There he primarily filled the role of in-house media person, helpful to teachers and students alike, encouraging the use of media as a way of instruction. His long tenure at the school made him well known to students through the years. He retired from the school in June 1996. During his years at St. Elizabeth's, he faithfully ministered to the Dominican Sisters in their convent, providing daily Mass. In retirement he was also chaplain to Mercy Retirement Center in Oakland, CA. In addition, he became a Spiritual Assistant to the Secular Franciscans in Oakland. As a confrere noted: "There was faithfulness there-he attended the meetings and worked with the local ministers in promoting the SFO." Survived by brothers: Vincent .J Scott (Theresa) of Modesto; Donald K. Scott (Anna) of Sacramento; sister Mary D Falls (Frank) of Oakland and sister-in-law Wynifred Scott of San Lorenzo. He was predeceased by brothers: Anthony J. Scott, Jr and Neil P. Scott. He was a favorite uncle to many nephews and nieces, including Father Vincent J. Scott, Pastor of Assumption Parish, San Leandro, California. To sum up Kenny's life, he was gentle, considerate, polite and kind. The vigil service for Father Kenny will be at 7:00 PM on Monday, May 31st, 2010 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Oakland, CA. The funeral Mass will be at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. Interment will follow immediately at St. Mary's Cemetery, Oakland.
