Lawrence Robert "Bob" Hagin

Lawrence Hagin Obituary

Lawrence Robert "Bob" Hagin Born Apr. 23, 1933 in Oakland, CA Died Aug. 30, 2004 in Walnut Creek, CA After graduating from San Leandro High School, Bob had a long career as an auto mechanic, later graduating from San Francisco State with a degree in Vocational Education. Bob taught at College Park High School for 23 years, mentoring a generation of auto mechanics, many of them becoming lifelong friends and associates. His passions included his wife, Carole, family, friends, cars, auto racing, storytelling and ongoing informal studies of history and anthropology. In his later ego as "Doctor Grease" at KCBS Radio, he entertained and informed both amateur and professional auto enthusiasts in every detail of auto lore, from the pragmatic to the absurd. His venues included both radio and syndicated newspaper articles, shared over a 37-year period. In addition, Bob taught for several years at Diablo Valley College. Sorely missing Bob are his wife, Carole, his 7 children and their spouses: Laura and Rick Cioppa, Terry and Pat Hagin, Darcy Hagin, Andy and Cathy Hagin, Tom and Karen Hagin, Matt Hagin, and Brendan and Mikele Lyn Hagin, his 17 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a host of friends and colleagues. A private celebration of Bob's life will be held Saturday, September 4, at the family home. The family invites you to share your memories of Bob at www.xanga.com/bob_hagin Donations welcome to Alameda-Contra Costa Blood Bank, Myelodysplastic Syndromes Foundation, PO Box 353, 36 Front St., Crosswicks, NJ 08515 or American Heart Association, East Bay, 426 17th St., Ste. 300, Oakland, CA 94612-2820.

Not a week goes by that I don't wish I could get some good advice from Hagin, just like I do with my mom and dad. After all, Hagin was like another dad. No matter how old we are when we lose wise people, we're still orphans! I often think I may not be smart enough to get through everything without them!!!!

I only knew Bob for 28 years. Being the son-in-law to his first born was an honor. Bob stopped giving me the eye after Laura and I had been married for 10 years. I guess he figured I was pretty safe by then. Let's give him a big hand.. Applause....

I first met Bob and Carol when I was in High School in the 60s. As a kid in High School I saw Bob as a very devoted and loving father and husband. His family always came first. I was also the babysitter. The kids were all great and I will always remember Bob and Carol and their great big happy family. Carol you are the greatest.

Hi Hagin's. We toasted Bob and all of you as well while you were at the game and elsewhere, like we said we would in the e-mail. The years of precious memories are the best gifts life has to offer. The older I get, the more precious they get.

Hugs to all of you. And Happy Birthday old buddy. Save us a good seat!

Thanks to all who have written their great memories of our dad. It really means alot to my family. He was a great human being and an even better dad.

All of his kids, myself, Andy, Darcy, Laura, Matt, Tom, and Terry, love him and are thankful that we were lucky enough to have him raise us. And can I just say that our mother Carole is the most amazing woman in the world and we love her more than words can describe.

Please attend the Martinez Martini festival October 23rd (?) from 8pm to 11pm in his honor, as my pops would have loved to have seen all the tipping glasses full of gin and vermouth!

Gracias!!!

Mr Hagin was my autoshop teacher for 1 year before I graduated from College Park in 1990. I enjoyed his humor & thoughts. Even though I only knew him for a short time the strong positive impact he made will be remembered for a long time to come.

I met Carole and Bob on July 4th, I belive in 1961, needless to say both Carole and I were pregnant, and thus was the friendship with Carole and Bob that has had the most profound effect on my life. Bob Davis and I moved to Sonora, soon parted company but my children and I never forgot you Carole and you Bob. Whenever I could get to the bayarea and I would either call or come by just to get "my battery charged". Even just a few minute with either of you would give me a hope in life, and a glow in my heart, and I knew life was good

I have so may wonderful memories of picnics, getting the kids in one little sports car, quality times together, just talking. I would often call and say if Bob answered, "oh it is just me", and Bob would say, "it is not just you, it is Cece! You both gave me strength I never new I had and my heart is breaking for you Carold, and also all your wonderful children and grandchildren.

Bob has affected so may people in his life and I so very, very pround to be one of his friends, and to wear the "Hagin Automotove" bumper on my new car, thanks Andy,

Love to all. I think of you Carole, I know it is a tme for a lot of changes for you, but know how much we all care. I will be down soon and hopefully can spend some time together.

Love, Cece Walker (Davis/Colvin,etc)

I had the greatest times with Bob those two times we went to S.F. Auto Show at Moscone Ctr. Both times got to drive cars worth my annual salary (plus!), meet some car guys, and the unique fun that just being with Bob provided. I miss Bob very much - and my hat's off to you, Bob.

Bob Hagin taught ROP Automotive Technology for the Contra Costa County Office of Education for many years. His program, which was located at College Park High School, included students from several nearby high schools. Over the years many local mechanics returned to thank Bob for the skills he had helped them develop and the successes they had achieved.

We are thankful for the contributions Bob made to our program and the community.

I remember one rainy afternoon, it must have been 1990... I went to College Park to pick my sister up, and finding the back field flooded, I found it irresistible. I carefully drove my car onto the lawn, and proceeded to spin some doughnuts as I waited for my sister to arrive.

Mr. Hagin came out of the auto shop, called me over, and gently reprimanded me, telling me that "... although I know it is fun, you could damage the sprinkler heads, ruin the field, and cost the school a lot of money..." and so on.

Well, the next week when I went to pick up my sister, guess who was spinning doughnuts in the field that day?! Yep, there was Mr. Hagin, in one of those Pintos, tearing it up on the CPHS back field. Hilarious.

He will be missed by all whose lives he touched. My tears and sympathy are with the Baby Catcher and family.

Bob, we can't believe you have left us so soon. This world is a better place because of you, and we are so sorry we did not know of your illness. We will always cherish our wonderful times we shared with you and Carole. You two truly have a real love for each other, more than any other couple we know. We miss you already, and will want to be there for your 2005 Celebration. Not knowing, we missed your Memorianl, but we will be there for you in 2005. Peace be with you and your family. You will never be forgotten.

I am a great niece of Uncle Bob. His brother Don is my grandfather and I am Mike Hagin's daughter. Uncle Bob has such a warm and friendly spirit and personality. I last saw Uncle Bob at my grandmother's inauguration to the Hall of Fame in Reno and what a BLAST we had with him! He was so Fun!!! And that humor and good spirit will be missed amongst our family, especially by his brother. Thanks for the memories and good times Uncle Bob! God Bless you Carole and Family. Your in our thoughts and prayers.

Love from, The Hagin Family.

Bob, fellow lover of British cars,we will miss you.

He was a straight-shooter if there ever was one. I recall the occasion of the Lafayette Concours d'Elegance some years ago. All the reporters got in free, of course. All except Bob, of course. He waited in a very, very long line to buy and pay for his own ticket. It's the kind of guy he was. Too bad more of us aren't like that.

Our deepest sympathy to Carole and all the family. with love Barbara and Pete.
