Nancy Spafford Obituary
NANCY SPAFFORD A 42-year resident of Woodside, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, November 28, 2004 at Stanford University Hospital with her entire family at her bedside. She was 74. Nancy Curtiss Wilcox was born March 3, 1930 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the daughter of Lansing Wilcox and Mildred Bailey Hale. She was christened in Rome, Italy and traveled extensively throughout Europe and South America. Miss Wilcox lived in Buenos Aires through her teen years and was a graduate of Foxhollow School in Lennox, MA. She won many trophies in equestrian and diving competitions. She was also a direct descendant of four signers of the Mayflower Compact. She and her family enjoyed the maiden voyages of the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth. On September 5, 1952 Nancy married Calvin W. Spafford in Sheffield, MA. They lived in New Jersey and Kansas before moving to the Bay Area in 1956. She worked in animal research at Syntex Laboratories and Stanford Research Center. She loved her family, animals, sports and medicine. Nancy was predeceased by, but never stopped loving, her older sister, Joan Hale Wilcox (Mrs. Goerge W.) Terpening of Portola Valley. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished by her four children, Marcy A. Spafford of San Carlos, Michael D. Spafford of Danville, Cathy S. (Mrs. Bruce R.) Stienstra of Woodside and Peter C. Spafford of Granite Bay; her ten beloved grandchildren; Jennifer, Marlena, Shannon, Christopher, Kaila, Josselyn, Daniel, Miles, Michelle and Peter as well as one niece and two nephews. "Mum" or "Mumsy", as her family called her, was an especially sweet loving mother and grandmother, who had a "heart of gold" by loving each member of her family in a very special way. She loved nature and was very spiritual, always giving of herself for others. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 4, 2004 at Christ Church Episcopal Parish in Portola Valley followed by burial at Skylawn Cemetery in San Mateo under the direction of Redwood Chapel. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the church. Due to Nancy's great love of animals, memorial contributions may be sent to the animal foundation of your choice.
