Oleg Dubney Obituary

Oleg M. Dubney
1941 ~ 2022
Dub-Lin Ranch, Crow Canyon, California
Oleg Michael Dubney was a remarkable man.
He was a good son, a devoted husband, loving father & grandfather, loyal friend and he was an American patriot.
At the hour before daybreak on Tuesday, March 22, 2022, Oleg passed peacefully into eternal rest at his home, encompassed by the love of his family and with his cherished Linda and sons Mark & Gregory by his side.
Oleg was a first generation American whose formative years were shaped by his parents' devout Russian Orthodox faith and service to the church, as well as their oft recounting of fleeing Russia as youths during the 1917 Revolution. And ultimately, by their emigree experience in proudly becoming American citizens.
Oleg was born and raised in Concord, California. He graduated from Mt. Diablo High School, Class of '59. Aside from the standard curriculum, he explored his interest in mechanics through the school's vocational shop classes with machine shop being a favorite. Oleg spent the immediate years after high school rebuilding cars, working at Mario's gas station in Concord and racing his fabled 1950 Olds 88 Club Coupe at Northern California dragstrips in Fremont, Vacaville and Lodi.
It was during this time in the early 1960's, that he met a gal from Pleasant Hill that would change his life forever for the better... her name was Linda Figoni. Oleg would often say, "Linda is my inspiration." and that his life truly began the day he and Linda wed in March of '62.
Oleg's marriage to Linda and becoming a family man prompted his "urgent interest" in business! While a student at Diablo Valley College (DVC), an instructor named, Clare Janes sparked Oleg's interest and fascination with numbers and accounting. With a clear direction forward, he transferred to San Jose State College earning both Bachelor and Master degrees in Business Administration.
At the time of his graduation in 1968, Oleg was elected to membership in Beta Gamma Sigma, the highest scholastic honor a student in Business Administration could achieve.
In addition, of the "Big Eight" national accounting firms, Oleg received 7 offers, selecting Price Waterhouse as the firm which provided his professional start and training as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
Oleg's professional career had one direction and that was "forward". Original and independent by nature, he determined that starting his own accounting firm would be the most natural direction for him while simultaneously being advantageous in providing flexibility and opportunity for his wife Linda and in raising their boys. And so, in January 1971 began, " The years in business."
Oleg loved talking business. And if you were in it, he wanted to know about it. "How's business?!!" usually accompanied a handshake greeting. Which in turn was followed by an unhurried sit down conversation or cocktails and dinner. For Oleg, doing business was as much about cultivating social relationships with his clients, as it was about simply doing and filing their tax returns. Especially during those early years in the 1970's.
Enter Oleg's wife & confidante Linda. Aside from typing 100 error-free words per minute on her famous IBM Electric, Linda's main role in the business was acting as liason to the clients and coordinating all their information for him. Many times it also involved entertaining by putting on one of her legendary dinners. Because if you were a client, you were like family. Oleg did the best possible job he could for his clients and he was very proud of that. He also employed and trained many a young CPA during his early years in business.
The types of businesses and clients he served ranged from early Silicon Valley hardware precision manufacturing fabricators, automotive body shops, entertainment industry clients to Pacific Northwest lumber mills. And while the common thread for all were the numbers, a favorite job of Oleg's were the lumber mill clients. He marveled at the production techniques and operation procedures of the mills. He admired the more moderate paced, live off the land, self-reliant way of life that his dear friends, Ben & Mary Jean lived.
Along the same lines, aside from his own father, Michael, Oleg would want to acknowledge two men who made an impact on his life. The family's neighbor, the mighty Tom Peterman from Texas who took a grammar school kid, Oleg under his wing and gave him responsibilities such as rototilling fields and helping with construction tasks.
The other was a distinguished Portuguese gentleman who was one of the early ranchers of the area. Somehow their paths crossed during Oleg's early years in business and while generations apart, they forged a mutual respectful friendship. That man was Seraphine Pexioto. And Oleg learned and respected the way Mr. Pexioto did business.
Perhaps Oleg was truly a rancher at heart, preferring the 19th. century way of life. Which is exactly what he did after each tax season and " cleaning up loose ends at the office." He returned to doing what he loved best, building the family home at the ranch, raising cattle and doing ranch chores. He also made certain his boys did their share too. Not only as kids, but also as adults when visiting home. - there was simply no escaping it! Many a Raider game was missed, as well as not being able to sleep in on a Saturday. "Hey, too bad. We're working!" And that was that.
But on the other hand, when the honest day's work was done, there was not a bigger sweetheart in the world than Oleg. As it was time to relax and look forward to whatever amazing dinner his darling Linda was cooking up. Anyone and everyone who worked with Oleg, or was a friend of the boys, was always welcome to break bread at the family table. Oleg loved company.
It was in these later years, that he truly began to embrace a more balanced way of life. He did so by growing a year-round vegetable garden, a passion he learned from helping his father in his garden. Oleg was his wife Linda's biggest fan when it came to watching her cook... so finally, he started to sous-chef for her and the two began a wonderful tradition of making homemade raviolis (Italian & Russian) whenever it rained on the weekends and of course over Christmas and New Years.
He also made friends with a very special group of folks he met at John Muir's Cardio Rehab Center. Oleg dubbed it the "Heart Attack Club" and from 2004 till the Lockdown he went 3 days a week without fail. The medical professionals who worked there and the friendships that were made there meant a great deal to Oleg.
Oleg accomplished and achieved just about everything he ever endeavored throughout his nearly 81 year life.
Really though, his true fulfillment and his true love - was making a life of 60 years & 19 days with his cherished Linda along with raising their two sons, Mark & Gregory.
He would say, "Shoot for the moon and if you hit the stars you're not doing too bad."
Well, Oleg & Linda made it to the moon and back with a couple of Twinkling Stars shining bright along their way...

Oleg is predeceased by his Great-grandmother, Parascheva Leonoff, parents Michael Aleksandrovich and Claudia Ivanovna Doobnitsky, his uncle Pavel Aleksandrovich Doobnitsky, cousin Glenn Leonoff, Father & Mother-in-law John & Margaret Figoni, brother & sister-in-law Vincent & Joanne Figoni and brother-in-law, John Roddy.

I am saddened to hear of Oleg's passing. I enjoyed him coming into the office to pick up lights. We would spend 45 minutes talking about business and politics. I am retired now and have missed our chats, but my daughter has had the pleasure of being the beneficiary of his wonderful visits. He is and will be missed, but will always be in our thoughts. RIP Oleg my friend.

I have known Oleg as my BFF Natalie's brother-in-law nearly all my life, as Natalie and I have been friends since kindergarten. It was always, "Linda & Oleg" as if they were one. I will truly miss Oleg's kind smile and warm and welcoming, "Well hi Joanie", when visiting the Figoni home in Pleasant Hill, as I often did having grown up just down the block. My sincere condolences to Oleg's wonder family and friends. He will be missed! RIP Oleg!

Oleg, I wanted to say thank you for making sure I, "little sister", was sound asleep before tip-toeing out with Linda while you "went-a-courting". Actually, I don't think you two lovebirds had a choice in the matter. That was 61 years ago, and I've known no one longer other than Linda or Ginny. So thanks!! Also, thank you for being "Uncle Dub" to Katy, Colleen and Nicholas. And, I might add, their 4H instructor. As John used to say, "I'll meet ya at the pass". Save us a seat at the table. Love you Oleg! XOXO
