Phyllis Anderson Obituary

Phyllis Foulkes Anderson Resident of Tiburon, CA Phyllis Foulkes Anderson, granddaughter of California pioneers and daughter of East Bay architect, Edward Foulkes, died at age 88 in Tiburon on July 15, 2009 of natural causes. She is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, W.C. "Andy" Anderson, her two children, Christine Mattison and Jeff Anderson, three grandchildren, Courtney, Julia and Colton, and three step grandchildren, Rachel, Jessica and Katelyn. She was predeceased by her loving son, Edward, and her beloved grandson, Derek. Phyllis was the proud descendent of Priscilla and John Thomas, a gold mining entrepreneur who owned and managed several large claims in La Porte, Plumas County, California. Her father, Edward Foulkes, who attended Stanford and MIT, was also an Ecole des Beaux-Arts trained architect who designed the Tribune Tower in Oakland, the Pittock Mansion in Portland, Oregon and the Rustic Parthenon at the 1915 Pan Pacific International Exhibit in San Francisco among other buildings. Phyllis was an alumna of U.C. Berkeley where she was the president of her sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi. She was a long time Bear Backer of Cal football and a loyal member of the Alumnae Club in Oakmont where she was also an active member in their tennis and golf clubs. She met her husband, "Andy" at Cal. He served in WWII as a paratrooper and received the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism in combat. A loving wife, mother and a generous and trusted friend, Phyllis found great joy in world travels with her husband and time spent with her children, grandchildren and her life long college friends. For over thirty years she and Andy hosted couples from Cal and their families on her forest property in La Porte, Plumas County. Phyllis survived personal tragedy with the untimely deaths of her mother, Charlotte, her son, Edward, and her grandson, Derek. She lived with the humor and grace of one who is loved deeply and who loved deeply in return. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a charity of choice. Phyllis will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Dear Andy,

I worked at Vineyard Commons in Santa Rosa for several years, about 6-7 years ago. I considered you and Phyllis to be another pair of grandparents to me, sitting with me, talking with me, having me over, giving me graduation and Christmas gifts... You helped me through several years of high school, and beyond- though you may never have known it. You eventually moved away, and I have since as well, but I still think of both of you very often. My heart thudded and my breath became short when I opened the Press Democrat website to find Phyllis' photo. She was a wonderful woman, though I of course don't have to tell you that, and I will remember her- and you- for the rest of my life.
I send my love and good thoughts your way, and out to your whole family. Xoxo.
Very sincerely,

Pamela Harries

Dear Chris, Courtney, Julia, Stan and Andy, You are a family so filled with grace, love and joy for family, heritage, friends and community. Your mother, grandmother and dear wife imbued those qualities. She was so enormously in love with each of you. Her imprint is forever. There is a part of her in each of you. We send prayers of comfort and support during this sad transition. Much love and very heartfelt hugs. We will be there on the 24th.

We will always have truly great memories of Phyllis Anderson. She and Andy were our friends and neighbors at Silvertip Springs and made our time there really enjoyable. Thanks so much to the Anderson family for all your kindness over the years and we want to share our prayers with you and remember Phyllis fondly as we celebrate a life well lived.

Chris, Courtney and Julia,
So very sorry to read of your mother and grandmother's death. No matter how old they were, it is still very difficult to lose your mom and grandmother. My mom died last August, and it is still an emotional time for me and Morgan. Our hearts and thoughts are with you. Much love and sympathy; we are so sorry... Connie and Morgan

Phyllis may have moved on, but the wonderful memories of her in those she touched will linger for many, many years. We were blessed to know her.

A great and sad loss. The whole Anderson clan --Auntie Phyllis, Uncle Wif, Chris, Eddie, and Jeff-- all were such a large part of my growing-up with our many New Years gatherings, vacation trips to Snowshoe Springs and La Porte, as well as hearing the stories (and seeing the pictures) of my Mom and Phyllis when they were young girls. A wonderful lady and the best friend my mother Marie ever had. My family's prayers and good thoughts are with you.
Love, Graeme

My most heartfelt sympathies to you all, Pyllis' family! Always one of my favorite sorority sisters and I was surprised to see she was a neighbor. My prayers are with you.
With much love, Marje Joost
