Phyllis peacefully passed away February 2, 2013 with her family at her side. Her positive, "can-do" attitude along with the support of her family and friends was the source of her strength for the last three years during her long and courageous battle with Breast Cancer.
Phyllis was born to Joseph and Frances Gajdostik of Toledo, Ohio. She went to Notre Dame Academy and graduated from Toledo University. Upon graduating, she married Dan Moldenhauer and began a family. Phyllis began a career as an elementary school teacher and enjoyed being a mother and consummate volunteer. Eventually settling in the San Francisco Bay Area, Phyllis became a travel agent, owning her own agency for many years.
Phyllis had a great ability for bringing people together. Some of her many interests included playing tennis, playing bridge with friends, her weekly rosary prayer group, volunteering for the church, fundraising for local charities, and was always the first to bring you just what you needed, even before you knew you needed it. She was always there for you.
She was fortunate to fall in love for a second time with her late husband Ed Mathias. Together, the two of them enjoyed life to the fullest. Phyllis' favorite motto was "c'est la vie" as they enjoyed traveling, entertaining friends, and social events.
Phyllis will be dearly missed by her children Curt and Liane Moldenhauer of Danville, and Lisa and Brian Highfill of Pleasanton; her grandchildren Jordan, Paige, and Wade Moldenhauer, and Drew and Benjamin Highfill and her brothers Edward and Mary Gajdostik and Joe and Judy Gajdostik, of Ohio and her many nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to celebrate her life at a memorial mass on Thursday, February 7 at 11:00 am at St. Joan of Arc's Catholic Church, 2601 San Ramon Valley Blvd, San Ramon, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
