I graduated from the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA in 1983 and went immediately to California as a Jesuit Volunteer to help create a program for severely developmentally disabled adults, called '21 and Still Growing' administered by the then Contra Costa Association for Retarded Citizens (CCARC). The program was temporarily based in a CCARC respite house on Geary Boulevard in Walnut Creek, where Sunny was the coordinator. I was 22, brash, knew everything, and was full of myself. Sunny helped me grow up, how to work with other programs, how to assert myself without being obnoxious, how to be graceful during tense board and committee meetings --- in short, how to be an adult and a leader. I will never forget her mentorship, her friendship, and her love. RIP gentle soul ...
