Wayne McAfee Obituary

Wayne C. McAfee Resident of Alameda Wayne passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, on December 19, 2013 at the age of 88. A long time resident of Alameda, CA, Wayne was born April 10, 1925 in Hobart, Indiana to Clarence and Hazel McAfee. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the US Navy completing his military service in 1946. During this time, he met his beloved wife Doreen while on a brief shore leave in the Bay Area. After several years apart and having lost Doreen's address, Wayne appealed to the US Post office for help in delivering a letter to Doreen with just a description of her last known address "the little brown house on the corner". The fateful letter reached Doreen, and they were married in 1950. Wayne graduated from the University of Colorado with a BA in Business Administration and was a respected Alameda business owner and community leader. He was active in Rotary, Elks Club and the Sea Scouts. He retired after 51 years with Farmers Insurance and owned the Alameda Cruise Center for 25 years. Wayne enjoyed golfing, fishing, boating, travel and vacations with his family. He will be remembered as a caring family man and friend to many. Wayne is survived by wife Doreen, children Sandra Poland, Gary McAfee, Susan Reynolds, grandson Clayton Plummer, step-granddaughter Miki Reynolds, great-granddaughter Jordyn Plummer, sisters, Joan Sprankle and Kathy Morella, nieces Jennifer Sprankle, Deborah Miller, Melissa Sprain and nephew Rodney Felfman. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 3, 2014 at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph's Basilica, 1109 Chestnut St., Alameda, CA followed by a committal at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Hayward, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations to the National Alzheimer's Association in Wayne's memory are preferred.
