Aurelius was born on July 4, 1961, to Aurelius II and Kathleen (Morris) Houston of Clovis, New Mexico. Aurelius Houston III age 63 of Clovis, New Mexico passed away Sunday, May 25, 2025. Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 3, 2025, from 1:00 PM- 6:00 PM at The Chapel of Angels, 1430 Thornton Street. Service will be held Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at St. John Baptist Church, 1215 Gila St. at 11:00 AM with Pastor Kasey Creamer officiating burial to follow at Oklahoma Lane Cemetery. Pallbearers André Guidry, Jacques Houston, Paul Young, Felix Crawford II, Isac Crawford, and Isaiah Houston.
Growing up in his neighborhood, every kid knew him and enjoyed spending time with him. During his Junior High year, he participated in the National Youth sports Program, hosted by Eastern New Mexico University. Although he complained about it daily, he was the life of the party. All the kids loved him. He was a member of the Wildcat Football team from 1977-1980. J.R. was featured in Sports Illustrated Magazine as the #1 nose guard n New Mexico. He graduated from Clovis High School in 1980. He received a football scholarship to the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico. He later served 4 years in the United States Navy. He returned to Clovis Following his service in the Navy and worked locally for Santa Fe Railroad, K. Barnett, Sam Sander Material, Inc. His favorite pastimes since childhood were fishing and hunting. He was a true sportsman. He bagged his first pheasant at the age of 18. It broke his heart when he could no longer enjoy hunting. His second love was a good novel. He loved anything from Westerns to mysteries, to romance. His favorite books were "The Wolf & the Dove", "Clan of the Cave Bear" series, Jack London, Ann Grey, and Louie Lamar Noves. When his eyesight waned he discovered audio books. He was called home Sunday morning, May 25, 2025, at Hillside Heights Rehabilitation Center.
Survivors include his parents, Aurelius and Kathleen Houston of Clovis, New Mexico. 3 children; Aurelius Michael Don Houston IV, of Lubbock, TX, Jared (Houston) Rhine of Anthony, New Mexico, and Mariah Rashell McPherson-Houston of Roswell, New Mexico. 2 sisters; Carolyn Houston of Clovis, New Nexico, and Evelyn Jean Houston Taylor (Roderick) of Ft. Worth, Texas, 5 grandchildren; Isaiah, Cordei, Aurelius V (AJ), Majernah Asher, 2 great-grandchildren; Kynsleigh and Isaiah Jr. He leaves behind a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by 2 brothers; David Houston and Kenneth Dwayne Houston, 2 great granddaughters; Angelisa Marley, and Ujkhyla Mychael.
