Vergil "Leon" Morris, 73, passed away Thursday, May 14, 2020, at his home in Clovis, New Mexico. A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 7, 2021, 10:00AM at The Chapel, 1500 North Thornton Street, Clovis, New Mexico.
Leon was born February 20, 1947, in Tucumcari, NM as the second youngest child of Lillie Mae and Carley Morris. In 1961, at the age of 14, his family moved to Logan, NM where he attended Logan High School.
In 1965 to 1969 he served in the United States Marine Corps. His service included two deployments to Vietnam. In 1966 he married Wanda Rodewald, his high school sweetheart. On October 8, 1967, they had a son, Vergil "Little Leon" Morris II. The time he spent as a Marine shaped the rest of his life as he would continue his public service as a Law Enforcement Officer for more than 40 years. After his discharge from the Marine Corps, he joined the California Highway Patrol. This was the first of a long career in law enforcement that also included serving on the Police Force in Tucumcari and then Clovis.
In 1974 he married Rosalie Gilman and adopted her son Gary as his own. In 1983 Leon married Vicki Brewer with her three sons, Mike, Bobby, and Bradly.
Leon retired, after 31 years of service from the Clovis Police Department in 2005 at the rank of Captain. After his retirement he continued to be involved with Military Veterans serving as VFW Post 3280 Commander and New Mexico State VFW Commander. His involvement with veterans and veteran organizations was his passion.
Leon is preceded in death by his wife Vicki, brothers Melvin and Hershal, and sister Dorothy.
Survived by son Leon and wife Maria, son Gary and wife Jessica, brother Steve, sisters Wanda and Roberta, 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
